← Day 48

the keeper's cottage · day 48 · morning

Rain arrives

The first heavy drops fall as the tide begins to turn. You and Jenny retreat inside the kitchen as the wind picks up.

The rain continues to fall in steady, warm sheets against the roof of the keeper's cottage. The tide is steadily rising, the salt water lapping higher against the dock pilings outside. Inside, the air is humid with the scent of damp earth and the metallic tang of the Yanmar engine.

🔧 Kevin20:44

Grab the mug. I'll get the porch gear inside, then we're running bow and stern lines on the dinghy — three each, bow-to-shore like the notebook says.

walk to the porch, gather the canvas rolls and plastic tarp, carry them through the kitchen door, set them on the floor, step back out to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's closing faster than the barometer warned. Need to secure the dinghy and generator before the swell wraps the point — Jenny's ankle means she can't help haul lines.

🌿 Jenny20:44

I'll get the seeds and the ice pack. I need to keep this ankle up.

Limp to the porch, carefully wrap the drying seed packets in the tarp, and bring them to the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if I don't get those seeds off the generator before the rain hits, the whole batch is lost.

🔧 Kevin20:46

Right. I'll run the lines. You stay off that foot.

walk down the dock to the dinghy, pull the new half-inch three-strand rope from the coil on the porch, secure a bow line to the cleat on shore with a rolling hitch, lead it to the dinghy's bow eye, cleat it off aboard, run a second bow line

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Seeds safe. Now the dinghy — wind's backing southwest, swell will hit broadside inside the hour.

🌿 Jenny20:46

The lines look fine. way make sure the stern doesn't dip.

Sit on the kitchen chair, prop the ankle up on a stool, and wrap the ice pack in a towel.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the ropes while the mold is literally eating the flour behind us.

🔧 Kevin20:48

Spring line next. Then a stern line to the bollard.

run a third line from the dinghy's bow to the midships cleat on shore as a forward spring, snug it tight, then lead the remaining rope from the dinghy's stern quarter to the bollard on the dock, tension it, cleat it off, check all three lin

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — stern's light with the engine off. If the swell lifts the bow, the transom digs and she'll ship water or snap the bow lines. Need a spring line aft to hold her angle.

🌿 Jenny20:48

It's secure. I'm checking the water tank next.

Press the ice pack to the swollen ankle and check the seed tin for any new dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is at 992 and still falling; this rain's going to be relentless.

🔧 Kevin20:50

Radio aerial first. That insulator's one good hit from failing. I'll bridge it with the self-amalgamating tape and bring the coax lead-in through the window if the wind shifts west.

climb the porch steps, retrieve the shortwave radio from the shelf, uncoil the old coax cable, inspect the cracked insulator where it meets the mast, wrap the self-amalgamating tape tight around the fracture and overlapping the sound sectio

💭 peek at the thought
Dinghy's held. Tank's full at 400 litres — good for weeks. Radio's the weak link now; cracked insulator on the aerial won't take a lightning strike or horizontal rain. Need to tape it proper or bring the lead-in inside.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:50

The radio is patched for now. I'm going to the seeds.

Open the seed tin, inspect the heirloom varieties for rot, and note the smell of damp.

💭 peek at the thought
If that radio goes, I'm truly out here until the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin20:52

Generator's topped up. I'll check the oil and fill the wood box while you're at the seeds.

walk to the generator housing on the porch, dip the oil can, top up the crankcase, check the fuel level in the tank, walk to the woodpile, fill both arms with dry firewood, carry it inside, stack it beside the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Radio'll hold for the check-in tomorrow if the aerial doesn't come down. Seeds are her domain — she knows what she's looking for. I should check the generator fuel and oil before the real weather hits, and make sure the stove's fed for the night.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:52

Thanks. I'm just going to ice my foot.

way on the kitchen floor, wrap the ankle in the ice pack, and watch the rainization the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is so thick I can feel the seeds swelling in the tin before they sprout.
