Pre-Arrival Prep
Jenny sits on the garden wall, checking the tension on the shade cloth while her ankle is elevated. Kevin organizes the new stakes and lines for the anchor repair, preparing for the boat's arrival tomorrow.
The air is heavy and still as dawn breaks on Day 483. The tide is fully out, revealing the slick rocks of the tide pools. Kevin is exhausted from a night-long vigil watching Jenny's ankle infection, while the garden waits for the supply boat's arrival.
Check the way ring again, Kevin. If it shifts even a way, the whole dinghy is lost to the tide.
Sketch the pattern of the red streaks on my calf in the margin of the notebook.

Checked it at first light. Wedges holding. Doubler plate didn't shift. But the scour under the north piling's worse — greenheart shim's seated but the void behind it's deep. Tide's low now. I'll look before the boat comes.
Walk to the dock with the heavy wrench and come-along, inspect the mooring ring mortise and north piling scour at low tide.

Don't go too far into the water. My heart is beating fast enough today.
Wrap the ankle poultice with fresh gauze, pulling it tight but not cutting off the flow.

I'll stay in the shallows. Just need to see how bad the scour is — if it's undermining the piling toe, we might lose the ring even with the doubler plate. Won't go past my knees.
Wade carefully to the north piling, probe the scour with the spade handle, check if the greenheart shim is still seated and not washing out. If it's loose, I'll drive another oak wedge behind it before the tide turns.

way watch the current. It's stronger than it looks at low tide.
Sit on the stone wall and watch him, tracing the red line on my calf with a trembling finger.

Current's pushing northeast — same as the wind. I'll face into it, keep low. Won't be long.
Probe the scour hole with the spade handle — feel for the piling toe and check if the greenheart shim is still bearing or if it's suspended in water. If it's loose, I'll drive an oak wedge behind it to take the load.
