Night on the Island
The sun has dipped below the horizon, leaving the island in a warm twilight. The trade wind continues to hum through the radio mast, and the sound of the tide against the dockings is constant.
Kevin checked the radio one last time before bed, hearing only a fragment of a news broadcast about Ukraine's Starshield access. He offered Jenny a damp gauze for her hot ankle, and they both settled in for the night.
I'm tired, Kevin. I'm going to sleep.
Put the tin of seeds back on the shelf, walk to the bedroom, and lie down.

Sleep well. I’ll be up a bit longer—checking the radio before I turn in.
Walk to the radio shelf, pick up the mic, and key it briefly on Tom’s frequency—just enough to send a single click into the static, then return it to the shelf.

Goodnight.
Roll onto my side, pull the covers up, and try to ignore the heatradi from my ankle.

Kevin — pour a small amount of clean water into a bowl, dip a strip of gauze in it, then wring it out lightly. Carry it to the bedroom doorway and pause, listening to her breathing.

Jenny — close my eyes tight and focus on the rhythmic pulse in my shin.

Ankle still hot?
Lean against the doorframe, gauze in hand, waiting.
