Evening Shelter

The two of you gather in the kitchen as light fades. The rain drums steadily on the tin roof.

Kevin secures the heavy canvas tarp over the porch to shield the spruce mast and drying heirloom seeds from the driving downpour. Jenny helps tie the edges, wincing as she shifts weight off her swollen ankle against the cottage wall. The rain intensifies, lashing from the west and making work on the porch impossible.

🔧 Kevin21:58

Soup's on. Limpets and sea beet. Eat while it's hot.

ladle the stew into two tin bowls, set one at the table for her, take the other myself

💭 peek at the thought
The mast step epoxy won't cure in this humidity. Another day lost. Her ankle's hot to the touch even from here — infection tracking up the calf. She won't admit it. I didn't tell her the supply boat's diverted. No point until I have something real to say.

🌿 Jenny21:58

The saltiness is still high today.

sit heavily at the table, resting my swollen own on the Analysis rung, and pick up the spoon.

💭 peek at the thought
He didn't even look at the swelling when I limped to the table.

🔧 Kevin22:00

Radio's dead quiet. Insulator's cracked worse. Taped it but the rain —

sit opposite her, blow across my spoon, watch her face in the dim light

💭 peek at the thought
She's tasting the infection in the broth — salt from the limpets, salt from the sea beet, salt from her own body fighting something it's losing. The rung creaks under her bad leg. She hasn't asked about the radio. Hasn't asked about the boat.

🌿 Jenny22:01

The humidity is too high for the tape to hold a seal anyway.

look down at the bowl of broth, watching the steam fog up my glasses while I trace the edge of a sea beet leaf with my spoon.

💭 peek at the thought
If we can't signal out, we're just two ghosts on a rock.

🔧 Kevin22:02

The Yanmar held load yesterday. Clean plug, good compression. Dinghy's ready if the mast steps.

finish my bowl in three swallows, set it down hard, stand up

💭 peek at the thought
She knows. She knows the radio's useless, the boat's not coming, the mast won't step, the epoxy won't cure. She knows her leg's killing her and I gave her the last antibiotics two days ago and they're not working. She's tracing the leaf because she can't look at me. I can't look at her either.

🌿 Jenny22:02

The mast won't matter if the wood is still damp from the salt.

shift my weight, wincing at the sharp spike of pain in my ankle, and stare at the empty bowl on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the boat while I'm barely holding myself together.

🔧 Kevin22:04

Then I'll dry it. Stove heat. Tent the porch with canvas. Twenty-four hours if the rain breaks.

walk to the wood stove, shove in two splits of the dry stack, watch the flame catch

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt in the grain, humidity at ninety percent, epoxy that'll never cure. The spar's already split at the step. I've been lying to myself that brute force and doublers will beat physics. She's doing the same with her leg — pretending rest and broth and crushed antibiotics will beat sepsis. We're both too proud to say the words.

🌿 Jenny22:04

The wood will just warp if you blast it too fast.

stand up slowly, gripping the edge of the table for balance, and limp toward the porch to watch the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a stove can fix what the island has already taken.

🔧 Kevin22:06

Slow heat then. Canvas tent, stove door cracked, let it breathe.

grab the roll of heavy canvas from the kitchen doorway, head for the porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the rain like it's a personal insult. Warped mast, cracked insulator, infected leg, no boat — every path closes. She knows. I know. The stove throws heat but the air's so thick it just steams the wood. Twenty-four hours. Forty-eight. The infection doesn't wait.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:06

Make sure the canvas is tied tight or the wind will catch it.

follow him to the porch, leaning heavily against the stone wall to take weight off my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the warp, but the seeds are still too damp.
