Midday meal and mast stepping plan

Rain drums on the cottage roof. Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with boiled limpets and sea beet. The mast step, sail, and tools are stacked by the door. Kevin's oilskin drips on the floorboards. Jenny's ankle is wrapped and elevated on a chair. The generator hums steady outside. They eat quietly, watching the water rise past the dock planks.

Kevin attempts to step the spruce mast but the high humidity prevents the epoxy from curing properly. Jenny tries to use the radio to contact the supply boat, but the cracked insulator makes the signal difficult to maintain in the rain.

🌿 Jenny21:50

The tide's higher than yesterday. We need to check the lashings again when the rain breaks.

Open the notebook and use a dry cloth to carefully blot the damp edge of the sea beet sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt is getting into everything, even the paper. If those seeds don't dry, my grandmother's garden is just rot.

🔧 Kevin21:50

Aye. Check them now before it gets darker. I'll take the bow line, you take the stern if you can hop.

walk to the porch and pull on oilskin trousers and boots, grab the coil of new half-inch rope and the marlinespike from the tool roll

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's eating the dock. Mast step's solid but the dinghy's still on blocks with no engine and the wind's due to veer northwest by midnight. Radio check's due and I haven't raised the supply boat. Her ankle's hot — antibiotics might not be enough. If the barometer drops another millibar I'm stepping the mast in the blow whether the wind lets up or not.

🌿 Jenny21:52

I'm staying here, Kevin. way check the stern yourself and tell me if the spar is slipping.

Lean back against the wall and watch him through the doorway.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't hop. way own feels like it's being squeezed by hot pliers every time I shift weight.

🔧 Kevin21:52

Right. Back in ten.

step out onto the porch, pull the oilskin hood up, and walk down the path to the dock carrying the new rope and marlinespike

💭 peek at the thought
She's not moving. Ankle's worse than she'll say. I'll check the stern lashing and the spar myself — dock's slick, tide's rising, wind'll be on the nose soon enough.

🌿 Jenny21:54

Be careful with the doubler!

Rub the base of the ankle and wince as the throb spikes.

💭 peek at the thought
If that mast fails, the whole system goes down with it. I can't lose the heat for the seeds.

🔧 Kevin21:54

It's bolted, Jen. Not glued.

continue down the slick path to the dock, boots gripping the wet boards, eyes on the dinghy's stern line where it meets the cleat

💭 peek at the thought
Doubler's bolted through with 10mm stainless and nylocs. It's not going anywhere. She knows that. She's just — talking. Keeping the air full.

🌿 Jenny21:56

way make sure the tension isn't off.

Pick up the pencil and start shading the cell structure of the sea beet leaf in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Bolted or not, the wood is soft from the moisture. The island is just laughing at my plans.

reach the dinghy, crouch on the wet dock planks, and run fingers along the stern line from cleat to transom, feeling for slack or chafe

💭 peek at the thought
Tension's fine. Rolling hitch on the cleat, half-inch three-strand dry and sound. She's giving orders to keep from thinking about the leg. Or the boat. Or the radio silence. I'll check it, snug it if it needs it, and get back.
