Afternoon Rain Soak
The rain begins to taper into a drizzle as the air grows heavy. Kevin and Jenny meet by the shed to discuss the next steps for the heirloom seeds.
Kevin and Jenny work in the garden under the steady trade wind as the afternoon peaks. The tide is receding, exposing the rocky edges of the tide pools. They focus on drying the heirloom seeds on the east porch to escape the high humidity that is making the paper packets stick together.
Let’s pull the seed trays under the shed and sort what’s viable. I’ll check the damp packets for mold while you label the dry ones.
walk to shed with Jenny, carry seed trays and tin of heirloom seeds under cover

Just be careful. The humidity is already making the paper on the packets stick to itself.
Sit on the low bench, carefully extending my own to relieve the throbbing, and open the seed tin.

I’ve got the trays. You sort the lettuce and pepper—I’ll handle the tomato and basil. We’ll keep the damp ones separate to dry on the shelf.
open heirloom seed tin, spread packets on dry cloth, begin inspecting for mold and moisture damage while Jenny labels viable packets

Don't put them on the shelf yet; the airflow in there is too stagnant.
Pick up a packet of heirloom lettuce and inspect the edges for any sign of white fuzz.

Then let’s take them to the porch—east side, where the wind cuts through. I’ll hang the packets on the line with clips so air gets both sides.
gather seed packets, walk to east porch, hang them on drying line with wooden clips, spacing them for airflow, while Jenny continues inspecting lettuce packets for fuzz

Make sure they aren't touching each other. The humidity is high today.
Lean back against the stone wall, rubbing my throbbing ankle while I examine the lettuce seeds under the magnifying glass.

I’m spacing them two fingers apart. No overlap. If any show fuzz, we isolate them now—don’t wait.
adjust hanging seed packets to ensure no contact, use magnifying glass to inspect tomato and basil packets for moisture or mold, hand suspect ones to Jenny for second check

Check the corners first. That's where the moisture traps.
Take the packet of lettuce from him, squinting at the edge for any white filaments or damp spots.

Got it. I’m checking every corner, holding the packet to the light. If I see anything, I call it out—no guessing.
inspect each seed packet corner by corner under natural light, damp packets held up to check for translucence or mold, segregate any with suspicion into separate tray for Jenny’s review

Look for any'iness. If the seeds look wet, they're gone.
Hold the lettuce packet close to my eyes, rotating it slowly to catch any hint of rot inside the paper.
