Seed Drying

The tide continues to fall, revealing more of the rocky shoreline. Kevin and Jenny monitor the progress of the seeds as the afternoon light begins to mellow.

The warm rain continues to drum a steady rhythm against the roof of the old shrine, turning the dust into a slick coating. The air is heavy with the scent of wet earth and salt. The tide has retreated far, leaving the rocky floor of the northern cove exposed and the tide pools glistening under the grey light.

🔧 Kevin08:21

Seeds are drying slow in this damp. Might need to move them inside before nightfall.

walk to cottage, gather heirloom seed packets from east porch, bring inside to kitchen table, spread them out to air-dry near the stove (not too close)

💭 peek at the thought
The dock mooring ring’s holding for now, but I can feel the tide’s pull in my bones — same as it was in the Bay of Biscay. I keep thinking about Tom’s letter under the floor. Not ready to read it. Not ready to burn it. Just… there. Like the ring: wedged, but not at peace.

🌿 Jenny08:22

Move them now. I'll help with the heavy ones.

Jenny stands up slowly, wincing and limping toward the table, way her ankle for support.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the humidity is going to turn these seeds to mush and I can't lose grandmother's tin.

🔧 Kevin08:23

I’ve got the light ones. You take the tins — they’re heavier than they look.

hand Jenny the smaller seed packets, lift the two heirloom seed tins myself, carry them to the kitchen table, set them down gently beside the others, avoid jarring motion

💭 peek at the thought
She’s pushing through the pain again. Doesn’t complain. Just moves. Makes me want to do better — not just fix things, but *see* her.

🌿 Jenny08:24

I can handle a tin, Kevin.

Jenny reaches for the tins, her fingers trembling against the cold metal, and sets them on the wood with a dull thud.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's being helpful, but he's just avoiding the weight of the conversation.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:25

Sorry. Didn’t mean to doubt. Just… you shouldn’t be putting weight on it.

pull out a stool, gesture for Jenny to sit, begin unfolding a clean cloth to lay over the table for the seeds, keep voice low and steady

💭 peek at the thought
She won’t yield. Not on this. Not on anything. I see it in her jaw — the same set she had when she wrestled that mooring ring barefoot in the swell. Respect. Not defiance. Just… her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny08:26

It's fine. Just move them.

Jenny sits with a sharp intake of breath, keeping her leg out straight, and begins opening the first tin with shaky hands.

💭 peek at the thought
If I sit down I'll never get back up. The knee is already starting to pulse.

🔧 Kevin08:27

(nothing — just move to assist without speaking)

gently take the opened tin from Jenny’s hands, pour the seeds onto the cloth in neat rows, begin sorting by variety — lettuce, pepper, tomato — work slow, keep eyes on my hands, not her face, let the silence hold space for her breath

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not asking for help. She’s stating a fact — *it’s fine* — like the tide’s fine to keep coming, like the pain’s fine to bear. I don’t fix this with words. I fix it by showing up, staying quiet, doing the next right thing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny08:28

The seeds are already starting to clump.

Jenny reaches out, her fingers hovering over the row of tomato seeds, too tired to straighten them.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being too careful. It's like I'm made of glass.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:29

We’ll need to get them in the tin with silica — or dry rice, if we’ve got it. Otherwise, they’ll spoil.

stand, walk to pantry, check burlap sack labeled ‘drying agents’, pull out small cloth pouch of silica gel (saved from supply crate), return, begin dividing seeds into small paper envelopes, label each, place one silica packet per envelope,

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity’s winning. Paper’s swelling, seeds sticking. We lost half the basil last week to mold. Can’t let it happen again. Not after everything.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny08:30

Use the silica. We have to be fast.

Jenny takes a handful of lettuce seeds, letting them trickle through her fingers, watching them fall own the damp cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
If these seeds rot, there's own left of my grandmother's garden on this rock.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:31

(nothing — focus on the task, voice only if needed)

work quickly with Jenny, packet tomato seeds first, then pepper, then lettuce, fold envelopes tight, tuck in silica, place each into the heirloom seed tin, seal lid with self-amalgamating tape, wipe down table, return tin to dry bag on porc

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right. Every minute counts. The longer they sit, the more moisture locks in. I can feel the weight of it — not just the seeds, but the weeks we’ve talked about this garden and never finished it. Time to stop talking.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny08:32

Put them on the shelf. For now.

Jenny leans back in the chair, her hand clutching her swollen ankle, watching the rain against the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
The seeds are safe for now. But my leg is still burning.
