Waiting for the tide to turn
The rain tapers to a drizzle as the tide begins its slow crawl back toward the shore, threatening to submerge the exposed limpets.
The rain continues its steady drum on the tin roof as the tide rises against the shrine. Jenny sits in the cottage chair, her ankle submerged in the basin of salt water, breathing through gritted teeth as the cold soak holds. Kevin watches the stove where the limpets are beginning to boil, the silence between them filled only by the ticking of the clock.
Kevin — walk back to the cottage, gather the bucket of fresh limpets, light the stove, and put a pot of water on to boil.

I'm coming in. Don't let the water over.
Jenny stands up from the stones, wincing at her ankle, and limps toward the cottage, clutching her notebook to her chest.

Door’s open. I’ve got the water heating—just need to dump the limpets in when you’re inside.
hold the cottage door open for Jenny, step aside to let her pass, then turn back to the stove and wait for the water to reach a rolling boil.

I'm exhausted. I need the salt water.
Jenny enters the cottage, drops her damp notebook on the table, and sinks heavily into the chair, rubbing her swollen ankle.

Basin’s by the door. I’ll fill it now—just need to lift it.
lift the galvanized basin from beside the door, carry it to the chair, set it down gently, then go to the spring, fill it with fresh water, and return to pour in a handful of sea salt from the tin by the stove.

Thank you. Just... give me a minute.
Jenny reaches down, breathing through gritted teeth as she lifts her heavy leg into the cool, salty water.

I’ll keep an eye on the time. Ten minutes, then we eat.
pull up a stool beside Jenny’s chair, sit quietly, and watch the second hand of the wind-up clock on the wall as it ticks.

The water is cold. Good.
Jenny leans her head back against the wall, eyes closing, listening to the rain drum on the tin roof.
