Morning Tides
Kevin and Jenny sit on the replaced dock planks as the tide recedes from the pilings. Jenny massages the swelling on her ankle while Kevin checks the damp barometer for signs of pressure change.
The morning air is heavy and humid, clinging to the skin as the grey light fully breaks. The tide is receding, exposing the slick rocks and the sand beneath the dock pilings. Kevin and Jenny stand by the water, the smell of salt and damp wood rising in the still air.
It's too heavy today. The air is squeezing the breath out of the island.
Jenny reaches into her pocket and pulls out her notebook, sketching a quick, jagged outline of the sea much's salt Consistency structure.

Let me see that ankle. You’ve been pushing through it too long.
kneel beside Jenny, gently take her foot to inspect the swelling and warmth.

I'm fine, Kevin. It's just the damp.
Jenny jerks her leg back slightly, her grip tightening on the pencil as she stares at the water.

Humour me. Let me redo the poultice with fresh sea beet and mint. It’ll only take ten minutes.
stand, walk to the garden, pull fresh sea beet leaves and mint sprigs, crush them with a stone, mix into a poultice, return to Jenny, and begin reapplying it to her ankle with clean gauze.
