Morning of the Turning Tide

The tide continues to fall, revealing more of the rocky shelf. Kevin and Jenny meet to discuss the tasks for the day before the heat rises.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny12:12

I'm going to the northern cove. I need to see how the sea beet is holding up in the salt pools.

Wraps the ankle tighter, picks up the sketchbook, and walks toward the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain. If I don't get that infection under, I'll lose the leg.

🔧 Kevin12:13

I’ll finish the ring before the tide turns. You be careful on those rocks—your ankle’s not ready for scrambling.

walk to the mooring ring, pull out the crowbar, and test the play in the mortise again to confirm where the rot is worst.

💭 peek at the thought
The dock mooring ring’s solid where the oak’s dry, but the rot’s still eating the pilings. Jenny’s ankle’s worse—heat’s still in it despite the poultice. She’s pushing herself again, same as always. I should’ve built that garden by now. Instead I’m here, wedges in hand, waiting for a boat that might not come.

🌿 Jenny12:14

I'll be careful. Just make sure the dock doesn't float away while I'm gone.

gives a sharp nod and starts walking down the rotting planks of the jetty, shifting her weight to the good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm fragile, but I'm the only one actually keeping this island alive.

🔧 Kevin12:15

Don’t rush. I’ll have the ring secured before you’re back.

drive the oak wedges deeper into the mortise on the starboard side where the wood’s still sound, using the mallet to seat them tight against the ring. Then check for movement by trying to shift the ring with the crowbar.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s moving too fast on that ankle. The jetty’s rotting under her weight—two planks already gone, and she’s favoring the bad leg. If she slips, the tide’s out far enough to leave her on rocks, not water. I can’t follow—got to fix the ring first, or the boat’ll smash the dock when it comes.

🌿 Jenny12:16

way don't lose the boat.

reaches the end of the jetty, steps carefully over the rotten planks, and looks out at the dinghy.

💭 peek at the thought
If he gets that ring right, maybe I can actually focus on the sketches without the world ending.

🔧 Kevin12:17

Painter’s secure? I’ve got the wedges set—ring’s not moving.

strike the wedges two more times with the mallet to drive them home, then test the ring’s play by pushing and pulling it with both hands, feeling for any shift in the mortise.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s at the end now, testing the dinghy’s painter. Good—she’s checking the boat, not pushing on the ankle. The jetty’s giving under her weight; I can hear the rot groan. If the mooring ring holds, the dock stays. If it doesn’t, we lose the dinghy, the generator, maybe the boat. No second chances.

🌿 Jenny12:18

It looks tight. Don't let the tide pull it.

checks the line on the dinghy, then starts the walk toward the northern cove, favoring her ankle with every step.

💭 peek at the thought
It's solid enough for now, but that wood is crumbling around the edges.

🔧 Kevin12:19

It’s tight. I’ll watch the line.

keep a hand on the mooring ring while Jenny walks away, feeling for any vibration or shift as her weight moves across the jetty, ready to drive in another wedge if it starts to work loose.

💭 peek at the thought
The ring’s seated—no play I can feel. But the pil.
