Nightfall and Falling Pressure

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage. The wind is picking up outside, rattling the shutters, and the oil lamp casts long shadows across the kitchen table.

The rain intensifies, a steady drumming against the cottage roof as the barometric pressure continues its plunge. The tide is rising rapidly, pushing the surf toward the dock pilings while the wind picks up, whistling through the gaps in the shutter frames.

I’ll check the shutter bolts before the wind tears them loose. You want the lamp moved?

walk to the shutter on the windward side, feel for play in the bolts with my fingers, then tighten them with the wrench from the shelf if they’re loose.

💭 peek at the thought
The shutters are rattling like they’re trying to get in. I should’ve braced them earlier. Jenny’s quiet again—she’s been that way since the ankle got bad. I don’t push. Not anymore.

No. Leave it.

Lean back against the wall and pull the blanket tighter around my shoulders, eyes fixed on the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
I can feel the fever starting to hum in my ears. Everything feels distant, like I'm watching him from the bottom of a well.

The wind’s lifting the edge of the tarp on the porch. I’ll weight it down so it doesn’t flap all night.

walk to the porch, grab the coiled rope and a sandbag from near the door, then secure the tarp’s flapping corner by tying it off to the post and weighting the loose end with the sandbag.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not cold—she’s holding herself together. That seed tin’s been damp too long. I can fix the seal, but she won’t let me near it. Not now.

🌿 Jenny00:46

Jenny — close my eyes and breathe slowly, trying to ignore the rhythmic throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's just moving things from one spot to another. Shifting weight. Bolting things down. Meanwhile, the red lines are moving up my leg and I can't even hold a pencil.

🔧 Kevin00:46

I’m right here if you need anything. Water. The poultice again. Just say the word.

pull the stool from under the table and sit beside her, not touching, just present—then take out the notebook and sketch the way the lamp light falls across the seed tin, the blanket, her hands.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s trying to ride it out. I know that breath—she’s been using it since the abscess. I won’t ask. I’ll just be where she can see me if she changes her mind.

🌿 Jenny00:48

I'm just tired, Kevin.

Open one eye and look at his hand moving on the paper, then slowly let my head slump back against the whitewashed stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's sketching. He's always documenting the surface of things. He doesn't see the fire under my skin.

🔧 Kevin00:48

I know. Me too. We’ll get through this night. The boat’s due in two days—if it comes.

close the notebook, set it gently on the table beside the seed tin, then stand and walk to the door to check the latch and make sure it’s fastened against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s tired. Not just of the pain. Of waiting. Of me fixing things while we don’t talk. I stopped drawing. The lines felt false.

🌿 Jenny00:51

Jenny — shift my hand under the blanket to touch the cold metal of the seed tin, feeling the ridges of the lid.

💭 peek at the thought
Two days. A lifetime if the boat doesn't come. The tank is full, but my strength is empty. continuedSAY: If it comes.
