The Squall Approaches

The first gust of wind picks up from the north, carrying the scent of salt and heavy rain. The flat sky finally breaks into a bruised grey.

The heavy, still air hangs over the island as the tide begins its slow turn inward. The barometer holds steady at 999 hPa, though the rising humidity suggests the pressure is merely holding its breath. On the far side of the beach, a sea turtle has hauled itself onto the sand to nest, oblivious to the gathering heat and the rising surf.

Wind’s picking up. I’m going to check the dinghy’s storm lines—make sure they’re holding. You alright out there?

Walk briskly to the dock, eyes on the dinghy snubbed with doubled lines, hands already moving to feel the tension on the storm warp where it bites into the bow cleat. Salt spray stings my cheeks as I pull the line tight, testing for give.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s shifting—north now, bringing that sharp, wet chill. Barometer’s still falling. Storm’s not just coming; it’s here, in the air, in the salt on my lips. I should’ve checked the dinghy’s lashings one more time. Jenny’s still on the porch. I can see her silhouette against the grey—just sitting. Not moving.

I'm fine, just watch the swell—the tide is pulling out further than I expected.

check the barometer and note the drop in the damp notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if that boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm in trouble with this ankle.

It’s pulling out hard. Barometer’s down to 992—falling fast. If it hits 990, we snub the dinghy and batten the porch. You got the notebook? I’ll check the south piling—see if those greenheart shims are still holding.

Move quickly along the dock toward the south piling, crouching low against the wind, fingers probing the joint where the shim meets the piling toe—feeling for shift, for give, for the hollow sound that means the void’s working again.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching the water pull back like it’s sucking the island dry—unnatural, fast. That’s not just tide. That’s the swell building under it, waiting to snap back. Barometer’s dropping faster than I thought. If it hits 990, we snub the dinghy and lash everything down. I’ve seen this before—water vanishing, then the sea comes back like a fist.

🌿 Jenny01:45

I have it right here. Just don't push it too hard, the wood is slick.

record the 992 reading in the notebook and watch the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
If those shims slip, the whole dock goes, and I can't fix it with this ankle swelling.
