The Evening Heat
The tide continues to rise against the dock pilings, and the grey sky remains heavy as the sun begins its dip toward the horizon.
The rain continues its steady drumming against the roof of the cottage as the evening fades into deep grey. The tide has reached its peak, waves lapping hungrily at the lower stones of the old shrine on the ridge. Inside, the air is thick with the smell of damp earth and the medicinal scent of the mint poultice cooling on Jenny's ankle.
Kevin — walk to the dock, inspect the mooring ring for shift or play, tighten any loose bolts if safe to do so in the rain and fading light.

Check the ring, Kevin. The tide is high.
lean against the doorframe, wincing as the ankle shifts, and watch the rain hit the sea.

On it. Be back in two minutes.
hurry to the dock, crouch at the ring, test for sideways movement with my hands, then sight down the bolts to see if any have worked loose in the mortise despite the oak wedges and doubler plate.

Don't take long, the light is almost gone.
grip the edge of the table, tracing the sketch of a sea beet leaf I couldn't finish.

Almost done.
feel the ring for any play, then if solid, give each of the four stainless bolts a quarter-turn clockwise with the wrench to take up any settle, step back, and jog toward the cottage before full dark.

Get inside. It's getting hard to see.
watch his silhouette against the grey, my ankle throbbing in time with the rain.

Coming.
leave the dock, walk quickly up the path to the cottage, open the door, and step inside to close it behind me, shaking rain from my shoulders.
