The two of them sit by the light of the lantern, the sound of the full tank filling the silence as they wait for the morning light.
The rain continues through the night, a steady drumming on the roof that keeps the water tank at its absolute limit. The air inside the cottage is cool and smells of damp wood and drying herbs, while the tide has receded, leaving the slick rocks of the pools exposed for the morning low.
