Morning Rain and Soaks

The rain slows to a drizzle as the tide begins its slow turn. Jenny is inside treating her leg, while Kevin enters to check the water tank.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin15:53

Tank’s holding. Overflow’s clear for now.

walk to the back of the cottage, inspect the water tank overflow channel and seals around the inlet pipe

💭 peek at the thought
The tank’s full, but I’ll still check the overflow channel — last thing I need is a leak soaking the cottage wall again.

🌿 Jenny15:55

Check the seals on the intake. The wood is weeping.

Sit on the kitchen chair, hiss through grit teeth, and slowly submerge the ankle into the basin of warm salt water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so worried about the water level, while I'm literally rotting from the inside out.

🔧 Kevin15:55

On it. I’ll pull the hose and reseal it with the oak shims and epoxy we’ve got left.

go to the spring intake, inspect the wooden housing and seals, note where the wood is weeping or swollen from constant flow

💭 peek at the thought
She’s in pain but still watching the cottage like it’s hers to keep dry. I’ll check the intake — if the wood’s weeping, the seal’s failed again.

🌿 Jenny15:57

Don't use too much. The shims should hold if they fit tight.

Lean back against the stone wall, watching the salt water ripple around the skin, focusing on the throbbing heat in the joint.

💭 peek at the thought
If he uses all the epoxy on the tank, what's left for the dinghy next month?

🔧 Kevin15:57

I’ll test the shims dry first. No point in sealing a bad fit.

remove the intake hose, clear debris from the wooden housing, test-fit the oak shims into the mortise around the intake pipe to see if they seat tight and true without forcing

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — if the shims seat true, they’ll hold without wasting epoxy. I’ll check the fit first, only use what’s needed.

🌿 Jenny15:59

Make sure they're flush. The pressure will find any gap in the grain.

Close my eyes and let the salt water sting the raw skin, trying to ignore the sharp pulse of the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's being methodical with the wood, even if he's ignoring the fever.

🔧 Kevin15:59

I’ll check the faces. If they’re not flat, I’ll true them on the stone — just enough to sit flush.

lay the oak shims on the workshop bench, use the honing stone to lightly true any high spots or roughness on the faces, then re-test fit in the intake housing mortise for flush, even seating around the pipe

💭 peek at the thought
Flush is key — any proud edge will catch grit and start a leak. I’ll true them with the file if needed, but only take off what’s necessary.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:01

If they aren't flat, the tank will just leak again once it fills.

Watch his hands from the doorway, my fingers resting on the edge of the basin as the ankle pulses in the water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the wood grain while my leg is turning into a way dish.

🔧 Kevin16:01

They’ll sit flat. I’ll true them, then bed them in epoxy only where they touch the wood — no squeeze-out to trap grit.

true the oak shims on the honing stone until they lie flat and even, then wipe clean and test-fit again in the intake housing to confirm flush contact with the pipe and housing on all sides

💭 peek at the thought
She’s seen this fail before. I won’t rush it — one bad seal and we’re mopping up again. I’ll get them true, then seal only the backs.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:03

Just make sure it's tight. I don't have the energy to fix it twice.

Lean my head back against the cold stone, watching the rain run down the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so meticulous with the tank while I'm sitting here rotting from the inside.
