A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The afternoon heat is heavy, the air still as the pressure begins to drop slightly. The leak in the cottage shutter continues to drip, the water saturating the interior sill and accelerating the rot in the wood. Outside, the high tide laps against the dock, bringing in a new piece of debris from the salt-crusted surf.

🌿 Jenny16:05

I'm going to sit.

Walk to the kitchen, fill a basin with fresh water from the tank, and sit at the table to soak the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is making my skin crawl; if I don't get this ankle clean now, I'll lose the leg.

🔧 Kevin16:05

Want me to heat some water? Or get the poultice ready while you soak?

walk to the stove, lift the kettle, and pour fresh water into it to warm on the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s pushing through the pain without complaint again. I should’ve noticed sooner how bad it’s getting.

🌿 Jenny16:07

Warm water would be good. I'll handle the poultice once I can de-salt this.

Submerge the ankle in the cool water, watching the throbbing pulse against the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but I need to Focus on the swelling first.

🔧 Kevin16:07

I’ll warm the water and crush some mint for the poultice. You just keep soaking.

place the kettle on the stove, add a handful of fresh mint to a clean cloth, and begin crushing it with the back of a spoon to release the oils.

💭 peek at the thought
The water’s not helping the swelling — just numbing it. She needs the poultice soon, and rest.

🌿 Jenny16:09

Thanks. I need to finish the morphology sketch while I wait.

Reach for the notebook and pencil, beginning to draw the salt glasses on a sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
The mint smells sharp, but it won't stop the heat in my bone. I need to focus on the sea beet before I lose my mind.

🔧 Kevin16:10

Take your time. I’ll have the poultice ready when you are.

stir the warming water in the basin with my hand to distribute the heat evenly, then check the mint poultice — it’s fragrant and damp, ready to apply.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s focusing on the sketch to keep her mind off the pain. I won’t interrupt — just keep the water warm and the poultice ready.

🌿 Jenny16:11

It's starting to help. Let me finish this sketch for a minute.

Press the pencil to the paper, detailing the jagged edge of the sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is getting warm enough, but the infection is still deep. If this doesn't clear up, I'll never get to my grandmother's seeds.

🔧 Kevin16:11

Whenever you’re done, I’ll help apply it.

lift the kettle from the stove, pour a little of the warm water into the basin to maintain the temperature, and set the mint poultice beside her on a clean cloth, within reach.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s using the sketch as a shield against the pain. I’ll stay quiet and keep things ready — no rush.

🌿 Jenny16:13

I'm almost done. Just one more Detail on the salt glands.

Lean forward over the notebook, sketching the microscopic crystal cups on the leaf surface.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is perfect now, but the skin is still so tight. I need to see the structure of these cells before I lose focus.

🔧 Kevin16:15

Take the time you need.

sit on the edge of the table near her, forearms on my knees, watching the pencil move — not hovering, just present.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s pushing through again. The sketch means something to her — more than record-keeping. I’ll wait.
