The Night of the Storm

The wind continues to howl, and the cottage shudders under the gusts as they wait for dawn to break.

The wind has shifted to the east, carrying the heavy, humid scent of a coming squall. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the newly-reinforced dock pilings and the base of the cottage foundation. Inside, the sound of water dripping from the shutter leak is constant, a rhythmic reminder of the rot spreading beneath in the floorboards.
