the keeper's cottage · day 528 · evening

Evening meal and quiet

They are inside the keeper's cottage, the door shut against the intermittent rain. Kevin is at the stove, stirring a pot of limpets and corned beef fat, while Jenny sits at the table, her ankle elevated on a stool, sketching slowly in her notebook as the light fades.

The rain has turned into a heavy downpour, drumming steadily against the cottage roof. Inside, the air is humid with the smell of damp earth and woodsmoke. The tide is at its lowest, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, but the fierce wind from the west makes any travel to the shore treacherous tonight.

🌿 Jenny16:27

Don't overcook the garlic, Kevin. The salt is already strong enough.

Jenny pauses her pencil to shade the intricate veins of the sea beet leaf, then winces as she shifts her weight, rubbing the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of the salt and fat is making me dizzy, but the hunger is sharper than the pain today.

🔧 Kevin16:27

Right. I'll pull it off the heat in a minute.

turn off the stove, lift the pot lid to check the limpets, then set the pot aside to cool slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
The garlic doesn't need cooking—it's the limpets that need time. I should listen, not argue.

🌿 Jenny16:29

I need the fresh water for the soak before we eat. It's pulsing again.

Jenny closes the notebook with a soft thud and reaches for the basin of water, her movements slow and calculated to avoid the sting.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get this infection under control, I'll combination be able to walk to the way ridge properly.

🔧 Kevin16:29

I'll fill the basin from the tank. You rest.

walk to the rain tank, open the tap, and fill the basin with fresh water, then carry it back to the table and set it within her reach.

💭 peek at the thought
She's in pain but won't say it straight. I can get the water without making a thing of it.

🌿 Jenny16:31

Jenny — jenny lifts her leg and carefully dips the ankle into the cool water, biting her lip as the pressure hits the inflamed skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying, but the salt in the wound is too deep for just a quick own. ownSAY: Thanks. I'll just get the grit off before it starts to really.

🔧 Kevin16:31

Kevin — pull the kettle from the stove hook, check it's warm not boiling, and pour a slow stream into the basin to take the chill off.

💭 peek at the thought
The water's too cold for an open wound. Should've let it warm by the stove first. Too late now.

🌿 Jenny16:33

It's perfect. Just a minute.

Jenny dips a cloth into the water and begins to way at the salt-stained skin, watching the water turn cloudy.

💭 peek at the thought
The warmth is good, but the throb is still like a drummer in my bone.

🔧 Kevin16:33

Kevin — wipe down the counter with a dry cloth, then sit on the bench by the wall and watch the rain on the window, keeping my hands busy by folding the dish towel into neat squares.

💭 peek at the thought
She's cleaning it herself again. I should stay quiet and let her have this.

🌿 Jenny16:35

It's starting to feel better down. A little.

Jenny presses the cloth to the side of the ankle, her breath catching as she watches the edge of the redness.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't clear the swelling, the seeds will just rot in that tin.

🔧 Kevin16:35

Kevin — reach into the first aid kit and take out the antibiotic cream tube, then hold it out without speaking.

💭 peek at the thought
She's noticing the edge of the infection. I saw it too this morning—spreading slow but sure. Don't alarm her.
