The Squall Arrives

The rain intensifies, and the wind begins to howl through the radio mast bracing.

The barometric pressure continues to hold at 981 hPa as the sky thickens over the cottage. Kevin and Jenny have patched the primary leak in the shutter with a greenheart splice and a steel plate, but the wind is beginning to pick up. The tide remains high, keeping the tide pools and sea cave inaccessible for now.

Jenny! Shutter’s leaking bad — I’m pulling the panel now. Hold the tarp till I get back!

grab crowbar and pry shutter panel loose from frame, then lift it clear to expose the rotted joist and sheathing underneath.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky’s gone leaden and the wind’s screaming through the braces — this squall’s got teeth. I should’ve pulled that shutter panel first light. Now the cottage’s taking on water where the rot’s worst, and Jenny’s still out there wrestling the tarp. I can’t let the garden wash out.

Watch the edge! The wind is catching the corners!

Grab the heavy-duty tarp and pull it over the opening, weighting the bottom with heavy stones to stop the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
If that water gets into the kitchen, the seed tin is ruined. I can't lose grandmother's legacy.

🔧 Kevin19:01

Tarp’s holding — good. I’m stepping in to cut out the rot. Hand me the saw if it starts to blow.

step inside and use the bow saw to cut away the waterlogged sheathing and soft joist, exposing the sound framing beneath while Jenny keeps the tarp weighted and braced against the gusts.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s got the tarp down fast — smart. The wind’s trying to peel it back like old wallpaper, but those stones are buying us time. Now I need to see how bad the rot really is before the rain turns this into a swamp.

🌿 Jenny19:03

Be careful with the saw! The wood is more decayed than it looks!

Lean my body weight against the tarp to keep it from flapping while he works.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. The wind is going to rip that tarp away if I don't hold it flat.

🔧 Kevin19:03

Cut it out, but not all the way. I’ll splice a greenheart offcut across the joist and brace it with a stainless‑steel plate. That’ll stop the water from finding a path.

cut a greenheart offcut to fit the width of the joist, then bolt it over the exposed section with 10 mm stainless through‑bolts and a nylon lock washer, securing it to the remaining framing on either side.

💭 peek at the thought
The rot’s deeper than the sheet. If I cut through the joist I’ll expose a void that could let water in right where the roof meets the walls. I need to brace it now before the rain bursts through.

🌿 Jenny19:05

Is the plate tight? The wind is shaking the whole wall.

Hand him the wrench to tighten the bolts on the steel plate.

💭 peek at the thought
The greenheart is solid, but the pressure outside is getting worse. My ankle is throbbing with every gust.

🔧 Kevin19:05

Plate’s in. Tighten it hard — I’ll hold the wood while you crank.

brace the greenheart splice with one hand while Jenny uses the wrench to torque the stainless bolts to 35 Nm, pulling the plate tight against the framing and sealing the gap where the rot was cut out.

💭 peek at the thought
The plate’s on, but the wind’s trying to lever it off the rotted edges. I need to get those bolts torqued before the sheathing gives way under the strain. Jenny’s holding the tarp — she’s buying me the seconds I need.

🌿 Jenny19:07

It's tight. Now get that way down before the rain finds a seam.

Pull the heavy-duty way over the opening and start stapling the edges into the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If this plate holds, the kitchen stays dry. But the wind is screaming like it wants the roof off entirely.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:07

Staple it down — I’ll hold the corners so it doesn’t billow.

pull the heavy-duty tarp taut over the repaired opening and staple its edges into the sound framing around the shutter, working windward to leeward while Jenny feeds the staples and keeps the tension even.

💭 peek at the thought
The plate’s torqued — solid. Now the rain’s looking for any gap to sneak in. If the tarp isn’t sealed at the edges, it’ll lift and tear. I’ve got to get it fastened before the next gust turns it into a sail.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny19:09

The staples are holding, but the pressure is still dropping!

Hammer the last staple into the corner and step back to check the seal.

💭 peek at the thought
Almost done. If I can just get this sealed, the moisture won't get to the seed tin.
