The Approaching Squall

The first heavy drops of rain kick up the dust, and the wind picks up from the west.

The steady rain has intensified into a downpour, drumming loudly against the cottage roof and flooding the dock. The water tank is now at its 400-litre limit, the overflow pipe beginning to trickle out steadily. The tide is at out low, exposing the slick rocks near the dock, but the falling barometric pressure suggests a much sharper storm than a passing swell.

🌿 Jenny18:44

Kevin, check the secondary mooring line again! The wind is shifting!

Stands up slowly, wincing as the weight hits her ankle, and moves to the mooring ring to test the tension of the cedar shims.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is bottoming out fast. If that surge hits before the shims set, the whole ring will pull right out.

🔧 Kevin18:45

On it.

walk to the bow of the dinghy, crouch, and inspect the secondary mooring line where it ties to the storm anchor warp, checking for chafe and tension as the wind shifts.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s coming from the west now, and the tide’s rising fast—just like the warning in the journal. I need to check that secondary line before the bow starts to dance.

🌿 Jenny18:45

Watch the dinghy! If it swings, it'll take the jetty with it!

Reaches into her tool belt for the cedar shims and begins to hammer them into the gap of the way ring to tighten the fit.

💭 peek at the thought
He's holding for now, but the wood is too soft. I need to wedge those shims deeper before the tide comes back.

🔧 Kevin18:46

Got it. Keep them tight.

grab the next cedar shim from the tool belt, hammer it into the mooring ring gap, and double‑check the snugness.

💭 peek at the thought
That gap’s always the weak spot. If the line swings, the jetty could be torn from its footing.

🌿 Jenny18:47

It's holding for now, but the rain is turning nasty.

Hammers the final shim home with a mallet, leaning her weight into it despite the sharp pain in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is soaking up too fast. If I don't get these tight now, the next tide will loosen them.

🔧 Kevin18:48

Good work. Let’s get the shutter panel off before the rain gets in deeper.

walk to the cottage, grip the shutter panel’s edge, and begin to pull it free from the rotted frame.

💭 peek at the thought
The shims are seated, but the wind’s still building and the rain’s driving hard. We’ve bought time, not safety.

🌿 Jenny18:49

way with the nails, the wood is going to give way!

Limps toward the cottage, her ankle throbbing with every step, and reaches out to help stabilize the panel.

💭 peek at the thought
The frame is like mush. If that whole panel goes, the interior is going to be ruined by morning.

🔧 Kevin18:50

I’ve got the weight—steady it while I pull the nails.

use the nail puller to lever out the shutter’s remaining nails, one by one, while Jenny braces the panel from the inside to keep it from shifting.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood’s spongy—if we don’t get this panel clear and braced, the whole shutter assembly could tear loose in the gust.

🌿 Jenny18:51

way! The frame is coming apart in your hands!

Puts her shoulder against the wood of the panel, gritting her teeth as she holds it steady while he works.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is giving through. If this panel falls now, it'll take us right through the wall of the cottage.

🔧 Kevin18:53

Hold it—coming free.

yank the last nails free, slide the panel clear of the opening, and set it down on the porch boards out of the driving rain.

💭 peek at the thought
The frame’s crumbling under the pull—if I don’t get it clear now, the wind will take the whole shutter.
