The Squall Deepens

The wind lashes the cottage as the tide drops to its low. Kevin and Jenny huddle inside by the light of the lantern, watching the rain turn off the world to grey.

The rain persists into a steady downpour, drumming against the roof of the cottage. Inside, the water tank has reached its 400-litre capacity, and the overflow valve is now rhythmically dripping. The barometer continues its fall, signaling that the approaching squall is more than a passing shower.

The pressure is dropping too fast. Check the shims again.

Sketch the cross-section of the sea much leaf in the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in three days, I'll have to start rationing the last of the dried fish.

Shims are snug, but I'll double‑check the bolts on the north wall; you keep the rain off the pipes.

check: tighten remaining shims on the shutter panel, test the lock on the north door.

💭 peek at the thought
That pressure drop means the storm’s coming hard; the shutters must hold or we’ll be soaked and maybe the dock will give.

way don't let the water get into the tin.

Apply the mint-leaf poultice to the ankle and wrap it tight.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's fixing the world while the rot is already in the wood.

Tin's on the porch shelf under the tarp. I'll shift it to the bedroom corner, higher and drier.

move the heirloom seed tin from the porch shelf to the bedroom floor against the interior wall, clear of any drip line.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the seed tin — water ruins everything slow. The shutter leak's been dripping toward the porch shelf. Need to move it or seal the run.

🌿 Jenny19:23

Put it far away from the wall. The stone is weeping.

Trace the outline of the sea much leaf in the notebook, my hand shaking slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
The seeds are the only thing left that hasn't failed me yet.

🔧 Kevin19:24

Wall's sweating — I'll lift the tin to the kitchen shelf, clear of the stone and any drip.

lift the heirloom seed tin from the bedroom floor to the kitchen shelf above the stove, away from the wall and positioned so air can circulate around it.

💭 peek at the thought
Stone's weeping means the wall's saturated; the tin needs air and elevation, not just distance. I'll get it off the floor entirely and onto the shelf where it can breathe.

🌿 Jenny19:25

Just keep them dry. The stove heat will help.

Wrap the gauze over the ankle, wincing at the throbbing heat in the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the moisture gets to them, my grandmother's legacy is gone before I even start.

🔧 Kevin19:26

Tin's up on the shelf, clear of the wall. I'll pull the shutter panel now and see what's really behind the rot.

pull the shutter panel from the cottage wall to inspect the framing and sheathing for water damage.

💭 peek at the thought
Stove heat will drive off damp, but only if the air can move. Shelf’s good; now I need to check the shutter panel before the leak finds a new path and ruins the dry zone we just made.
