Midday Stillness
Kevin is back at the cottage sorting seeds while Jenny continues along the cliff path.
Kevin's seed salvage failed when the battery fan sputtered and died, scattering damp packets across the table; mold spores puffed into the air. Jenny successfully sketched the sea beet's salt glands and gathered a good handful of succulents from the cliff cracks before the light faded. A coconut crab raided the garden overnight, uprooting two tomato plants and shredding the shade cloth.
You sit at the kitchen table, carefully laying out the damp seeds on drying paper. The humidity prevents them from drying as quickly as expected.
Kevin — spread heirloom seed packets on fresh paper towels across the kitchen table, crack the window wider despite the drizzle, set the notebook open to the seed log page

Kevin — lift each packet with tweezers, scrape visible mold from edges with a scalpel blade, lay them back down on dry corners of the paper, turn on the battery fan and aim it across the table

You move further along the ridge, looking for a sheltered pocket where the plants might be protected. The sun beats down on the exposed rock.
Come on, just one more.
Shift my weight and reach into the narrow crack of the rock to grasp the succulent.

Jenny — wipe the sweat from my eyes with my forearm and look back toward the cottage.
