evening meal and radio call

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as dusk settles. The generator hums steady. Kevin sits at the radio with the supply boat frequency tuned, notebook open to the ETA page. Jenny sets a pot of water on the stove for the remaining limpets. The garden damage is visible through the window. The barometer still reads 981 hPa.

The air pressure drops rapidly as the overcast sky thickens, signaling an approaching storm. Kevin uses the shortwave radio to contact the supply boat regarding the ETA, while Jenny focuses on securing the cottage and garden against the coming rain.

🔧 Kevin03:02

Barometer's stuck at 981. Supply boat's not making the crossing in this. We eat what we have.

Pick up the microphone, key 2182, and call the supply boat for ETA.

💭 peek at the thought
The needle hasn't moved in six hours. Either the front's stalled or the gauge is lying. Either way, the boat's not coming tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny03:03

The limpets are almost done. I have the sea beet, too.

Place the notebook on the table and set the bundle of succulents on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks at the radio like it's a lifeline, but it's just a plastic box between us and a boat that isn't coming.

🔧 Kevin03:04

Eat first. Radio can wait.

Set the microphone down, pull out the chair opposite her at the table, and wait for the food.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow. The fever's still in her bones even if the antibiotics are working. Should've made her sit.

🌿 Jenny03:04

I'm hungry.

Drain the boiled limpets into the skillet and toss in the chopped sea beet.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's being practical, but the silence between us is getting heavier than the humidity.

🔧 Kevin03:06

Smells better than last week's crab.

Scoop a portion onto the chipped enamel plate she slides over, eat with the fork, and drink the broth straight from the bowl when the solids are gone.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Eat. Get warm. The rest can rot.

🌿 Jenny03:06

It's the salt from the tide.

Take a bite of the sea much and watch the clouds darken over the cliffs.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so easy to please when he's not staring at the radio waves.

🔧 Kevin03:08

Front's not breaking tonight. Generator's got fuel for three days if we run it evenings only.

Wipe the plate clean with a finger, lick it, and reach for the notebook to log the barometer reading and the radio silence.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the weather like she can will it different. Can't. Never could.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:08

I'll keep the radio off. I need to check the seeds.

Sketch the morphology of the sea beet on the next page of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days of light is a long time to be dejected in the dark.

🔧 Kevin03:10

Seeds aren't going anywhere. Neither are we.

Tear a blank page from the back of the notebook, fold it into a crude envelope, and slide it across the table toward her — a place for the succulent specimens she brought in.

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds can wait. Her hands are shaking. She won't admit it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:10

They're damp. They need to dry.

Take the tin of seeds from my pocket and lay the amaranth on the paper envelope.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the island is an anchor, but it's just a cage.
