Morning fungicide round

Kevin and Jenny stand among the seed trays at the garden wall, the air thick and still under the overcast sky. Kevin holds the copper sulfate spray bottle, its nozzle dripping onto his boot, while Jenny crouches with a tweezers and a newspaper bag for the culls. The damping-off fuzz glints white at the soil line of the remaining pepper and lettuce cells, and a coconut crab track cuts fresh across the mud beside the trays.

Inside the cottage kitchen, the air is heavy with the scent of salt and damp earth. Jenny sets the rusted seed tin on the table, her eyes fixed on the grey-white mold creeping across the lid. Kevin waits with the tweezers and the sheet of newspaper, the tension of the garden reflected in the state of their heirloom harvest.

🌿 Jenny06:23

Hold the bottle steady, Kevin. Don't get the healthy ones.

Crunches to pluck a blackened seedling with the tweezers and drops it into the bag.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't spray these now, the rot will take the whole batch before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin06:23

Aye.

Lower the spray bottle nozzle close to the soil surface of the affected pepper and lettuce cells, shielding the adjacent tomato and basil trays with my free hand, and apply a targeted mist to each damping-off spot.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The spray drift in this still air will settle where it lands. Need to keep the nozzle tight to the soil line on the diseased cells only.

🌿 Jenny06:25

Thanks. Now I need to check the tin; the mold is getting worse.

Stand up slowly, wincing at the ankle, and walk toward the cottage door.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful for once, but the salt is still stinging in my skin.

🔧 Kevin06:25

Want me to carry it out?

Finish spraying the last affected cell, cap the copper sulfate bottle, and set it on the garden wall before following her toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring that ankle more than she lets on. The poultice held through the night but the swelling hasn't gone down. Tin's on the kitchen shelf — she'll see the mold spread for herself.

🌿 Jenny06:27

Jenny — step into the kitchen and head for the shelf where the seed tin sits.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be useful, but I just want to be alone. ownSAY: Leave it. I'll get it in later.

🔧 Kevin06:27

Kevin — step inside after her, pull out a chair at the table, and set the tweezers and a clean newspaper sheet ready for sorting.

💭 peek at the thought
Kitchen's cooler. Tin's been sealed since the storm but the damp got in before we taped it. She'll want to sort the viable from the dead before the supply boat comes.

🌿 Jenny06:29

Don't touch the paper yet.

Reach for the rusted tin on the shelf and set it on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to see if the damp got to grandmother's marigolds.

🔧 Kevin06:29

Kevin — hands flat on the table edge, watching.

💭 peek at the thought
She's got a system. Let her run it.
