The Mold Inspection

The tin is opened, and the smell of damp grain and mildew fills the small space.

Kevin and Jenny sorted heirloom seed packets, separating viable seeds from moldy ones using tweezers and a magnifying glass. Kevin worked carefully and methodically, while Jenny struggled with anxiety and tremors, slowing the process. The viable seeds were set aside for planting; the rest were prepared for burning.

🔧 Kevin06:31

Get the newspaper. And the copper spray.

peel back the tin lid fully, angling it so the spores don't drift toward the stove or seed trays

💭 peek at the thought
The mold's worse than I thought. Three varieties showing fuzz at the crown. If the spores hit the garden beds we lose the season.

🌿 Jenny06:31

I have it. Just... don't breathe too hard.

Lay the newspaper on the table and reach for the copper spray with trembling hands.

💭 peek at the thought
If the mold is deep-seated, the whole batch is gone. I can't lose Gran's legacy to humidity.

🔧 Kevin06:33

Step back. I'll do it.

take the copper spray from her, shake it once, mist the inside of the tin lid first, then the seed packets showing mold, working quick and light

💭 peek at the thought
Her hands shake. She's seen what damp does to a season's work. I'll take the spray — steadier.

🌿 Jenny06:33

Be careful with the packets. They're brittle.

Step back and lean against the counter, watching the mist settle on the grey fur.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too fast. If he uses too much water, he'll just rot them faster.

🔧 Kevin06:34

Viable ones go on the dry paper. The rest we burn.

lift each packet with two fingers, tap gently over the newspaper — sound seed rattles, moldy clumps stick — separate them into two piles

💭 peek at the thought
Packets are wet-cardboard fragile. One wrong move and the seed spills. Spray's done its work on the surface fuzz — now the real sort begins.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:35

Wait. Check the edges. The mold might be surface only.

Lean forward to squint at the pile of seeds on the newspaper.

💭 peek at the thought
If he throws away even one good bean, I might lose it. I need to see the surface myself.

🔧 Kevin06:36

Hand me the tweezers and the magnifier.

pick up the magnifying glass from the shelf, take the tweezers from her, pluck three seeds from the worst-looking packet, hold them under the glass — check for plumpness, cracks, mold penetration at the hilum

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Surface mold doesn't mean dead embryo. Need to test a few from each packet before I write them off.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:37

And?

Hold my breath and lean in to see the magnification.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being clinical about it. Plump, no cracks... please let them be plump.

🔧 Kevin06:39

Two good. One cracked. This packet stays.

set the three seeds on a clean corner of the newspaper, pick up the next suspect packet, repeat — three seeds under the glass

💭 peek at the thought
Two of three look sound — plump, hilum clean, no hyphae penetrating. The third's got a hairline crack at the shoulder. That packet's not a total loss.

🌿 Jenny06:39

Keep going. Don't rush the ones from the bottom of the tin.

Shift my weight off my ankle and watch the seeds through the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
Two out of three. Those are odds I can live with. But the cracked one is a warning.
