The Wind Shifts

The still air breaks as the first cool gust carries salt from the north. The tide reaches the dock pilings.

Kevin checked the dock and the dinghy lines as the air pressure continued to drop. Jenny attempted to plant in the garden but her fever and swollen ankle made the work nearly impossible. A seabird chick fell from the cliff ledges near the cottage.

🔧 Kevin10:16

(quiet, to Jenny) Wind's shifting. Going to check the dinghy and the dock ring. Back in ten.

walk down to the dock, inspect the dinghy bow line and storm anchor warp tension, check the mooring ring movement in the mortise under load, test the oak wedges with a heel kick

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still falling and the wind's backing north. Tide's up. If the chop builds against the pilings, the dock ring won't hold — wedges or no wedges. Need to check the dinghy lines and the storm anchor warp before the swell hits the mooring.

🌿 Jenny10:17

Don't stay out long. The pressure is dropping and I'll be on the porch.

wipes grit from brow with the back of a shaky hand, winces as weight shifts on the injured ankle, and crawls toward the prepared garden bed to press the first tomato seed into the soil.

💭 peek at the thought
My head is throbbing in time with the pulse in my ankle, and the heat is unbearable—if I don't get these seeds in the ground before the rain hits, they'll rot just like everything else.

🔧 Kevin10:18

(without turning) Won't. Holler if the fever spikes or the wind picks up hard.

continue down to the dock, pull the dinghy bow line hand-over-hand to check chafe at the forward eye, lean over the gunwale to verify the storm anchor warp isn't fouling the keel, grab the mooring ring and heave sideways to test wedge bite

💭 peek at the thought
She's planting tomatoes in a falling barometer with a fever and a bad ankle. Stubborn as the engine bolts. But she's vertical and working — that's more than yesterday. I'll make the dock check fast.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:18

I'm fine.

digs a shallow hole in the dirt with a trembling fingernail, drops the tomato seed in, and presses it down with earth despite the汗 stinging her eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the wind, but I'm the one watching the life wither away in this heat. I need to finish this row, just one row.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:20

(over shoulder, already turning back) Seed's in. I'm coming up.

jog back up the path to the cottage, cut across the garden to avoid the tide line, scan the south wall tarp for lifted corners or loose timber strips as I approach the porch step

💭 peek at the thought
Seed in the ground. Good. Barometer's still dropping — 978 now if I had to guess. Wind's holding north for the moment, but the shift's coming. If the tide turns and the chop builds from the west, that mooring ring's going to work itself loose. Need to get back and reseal the south wall tarp before the spray starts.

🌿 Jenny10:41

The tarp's loose again. Tarp's loose on the south corner.

kicks at a loose timber strip holding down the tarp, wincing as her ankle protests, then scrambles to the cottage shelf to grab the seed tin. </think>THOUGHT: The tarp's loose again.

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp's already lifting at the southeast corner again—if I can just get these seeds in the ground before the wind catches it properly.

🔧 Kevin10:41

(reaching the porch step) Get off the ankle. I've got it.

grab the loose timber strip, pull the tarp tight along the south wall, drive the oak stake deeper with the heel of my boot, weigh the edge with the tool bag and two stones from the garden border

💭 peek at the thought
She's on her feet with a busted ankle and a fever, chasing the tarp corner while I was down at the dock. The timber strip she kicked — that's the one I re-staked yesterday. Wind's getting under it. If the rain hits the seed trays on the porch, the damping-off'll take the rest. Need to batten it proper this time, heavier weight, more stakes.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:43

It's holding for now.

sits on the whitewashed stone of the porch, clutching her swollen ankle, and watches the grey clouds gather over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fixing the house, but I'm the one watching the world rot in the heat. My skin feels like a physical weight and I can't see my math clearly.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:44

(setting the tool bag down) Holding. You need water. And the metronidazole in twenty.

go inside to the kitchen shelf, pull the water basin and tin mug, fill it from the rain tank tap, set it on the porch rail beside her, check the antibiotic blister pack for the next dose

💭 peek at the thought
Tarp's battened. She's down and the ankle's throbbing — can see it in the way she's breathing. Barometer's still dropping. Wind's north-northwest now, steady. The chop'll be hitting the dock pilings within the hour. Need to check the generator fuel and the radio aerial before the storm hits proper. And she needs the next antibiotic dose in forty minutes.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:45

I'll take it.

reaches for the mug with a trembling hand, stares at the seed tin on the shelf, and tries to remember the morphology of the sea much I was drawing yesterday.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always counting the minutes, but I'm the one counting the heartbeats in my leg. The red line is moving higher, and the fever is blurring the sketches.
