← Day 545

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the garden

Midday rounds and garden work

Kevin tends the cottage systems and prepares the midday antibiotic dose while Jenny works in the garden setting up emergency irrigation and treating seedlings.

The air is heavy and still as the pressure drops to 979 hPa. Kevin is on the porch tending to Jenny's fever medication, while Jenny is at the garden, struggling to finish the irrigation lines despite her feverish state and the rising tide.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You sit at the kitchen table with the thermometer and antibiotic blister packs, listening to the wind test the tarp you just secured. The generator hums steady outside. Jenny's next dose is due in twenty minutes. The shortwave sits under its tarp on the porch, aerial still shattered but the insulator you filed and taped holds. You'll try the coastguard on 16 after she takes the meds.

Kevin — check thermometer reading and prepare doxycycline and metronidazole doses for Jenny's next round

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes. Barometer's still dropping. Coastguard on 16 after the dose — if the aerial holds long enough to transmit.

🔧 Kevin10:10

Jen. Time for your dose.

Walk to the porch where Jenny's sleeping, thermometer and blister packs in hand

💭 peek at the thought
Time to wake her. The meds won't wait and neither will the fever.

🔧 Kevin10:14

Jen. Open your eyes for me. Just long enough to swallow.

Sit on the edge of the porch bench, prop her up against my shoulder, and press the thermometer into her armpit while popping the doxycycline and metronidazole from the blister packs

💭 peek at the thought
She's burning up. The dose can't wait for her to fully wake.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You hobble down the path to the garden, ankle braced and cane in hand, the seed packets tucked in your coat pockets. The shade cloth over the tomatoes flaps in the gusts but holds. Three water drums sit near the tank outlet — you need to rig the gravity feed lines to the beds before the tank level drops further.

🌿 Jenny10:05

Come on, Jenny, just one more line.

Kneel painfully beside the water drums and begin connecting the plastic tubing to the first garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if I don't get the irrigation up now, those seeds will be dust before they even hit the dirt.

🌿 Jenny10:08

way there.

Wipe sweat from my brow with a forearm and reach for the next packet of seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the pulse, but the line is finally secured and water is actually dripping where it should.

🌿 Jenny10:12

Almost done.

Carefully press a small trench in the soil and drop the first 'Black Krim' seeds in.

💭 peek at the thought
The irrigation is holding, but the heat is starting to make my head swim—I need to get these in before the fever spikes.
