Morning Watch

Rain hammers the cottage roof and the tarp over the porch. Kevin sits beside Jenny on the narrow bed, a damp cloth on her forehead, the pen-marked line on her calf now faded but the heat radiating from her leg unmistakable. The barometer on the shelf hasn't moved from 981 hPa, and the tide is still out, leaving the dock timbers exposed and the mooring ring held fast by oak wedges.

Heavy rain moves in from the west, cooling the air as the day breaks. Kevin monitors Jenny's fever while preparing to secure the garden wall tarps before the wind picks up.

Kevin, the boat's delay means I need to start planting tomorrow regardless of my leg.

Press the damp cloth harder against the red line on my calf and mark its new edge with the pen.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection's spreading despite the antibiotics, and I'm too proud to ask for help with the garden work.

The boat's not the variable. Your leg is. Temp first. Then we talk planting.

check Jenny's temperature with the thermometer from the medical kit

💭 peek at the thought
She's burning up and talking about planting. The infection's tracking upward despite the antibiotics. I need to check her temp again, re-dose if it's holding, and get on the radio to the coastguard for a medevac relay — subscription or no subscription. The garden can wait. She can't.

Thirty-nine-two... I know, I've been running fever since yesterday. The antibiotics are almost done though - just three more days." "Thirty-nine-two... I know, I've been running fever since yesterday. The antibiotics are almost done though - just three more days.

Take the prescribed pills from the blister pack and swallow them with water from the canteen. </think> Take the prescribed pills from the blister pack and swallow them with water from the canteen.

He's right about the priority, but the antibiotics need to be finished and the seeds can't wait much longer. The infection's spreading despite the antibiotics, and I'm too proud to ask for help with the garden work.

Three days. And if it's not dropping by noon, I'm giving you the ceftriaxone shot. Expired or not. Then I'm calling the coastguard on channel 16 for a medevac relay. The subscription doesn't matter — they monitor 16.

check the medical kit for the ceftriaxone vial and draw-up supplies, verify it's still sealed and clear

💭 peek at the thought
Three days of pills left and she's still at 39.2. The course isn't cutting it. That ceftriaxone in the kit — expired but potency holds if it was stored cool. Need to draw it up IM if the fever hasn't broken by noon. And I'm raising the coastguard on 16 regardless of the sat phone subscription. They know our position from the medevac forms.

I don't need a helicopter, Kevin. I need the seeds in the ground.

Reach for the seed tin on the nightstand, feeling the cold metal against my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about medevacs again like he's planning an exit strategy instead of helping me heal. The infection's spreading despite the antibiotics, and I'm too proud to ask for help with the garden work.

The seeds aren't going anywhere. You are — if that infection hits your bloodstream. Noon. We reassess.

press the back of my hand to her forehead, then reach for the radio handset and flip to channel 16, listening for traffic before keying the mic

💭 peek at the thought
She's negotiating with a fever that's already won two rounds. The seeds will keep — they've kept through worse. She won't. If that line on her calf moves another centimeter by noon, the ceftriaxone goes in and the radio goes live. No argument.
