The Storm Deepens

The rain intensifies, and the pressure drops slightly as the west wind howls through the trees.

Kevin secured the south wall tarp against the rising wind and moved the heirloom seed tin to the high kitchen shelf. Jenny, despite her fever and ankle injury, managed to check her temperature and organize the viable seeds from her grandmother's tin for planting.

Kevin, check the latch on the kitchen window. The wind is picking up.

Reach for the thermometer on the nightstand, wincing as the movement jars my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if this storm hits, the garden beds will be washed away before I even start.

On it.

Walk to the kitchen window, check and secure the latch, then move to the porch door to assess the south wall tarp tension.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the gusts are hitting the porch hard now. Window latch first, then the south wall tarp before it tears loose.

Don't forget the seed tin—move it to the high shelf before the humidity spikes.

way up slowly, clutching the blanket as I watch the grey light fade outside the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast; he's going to snap the line if he isn't careful with the tension.

Got it. Tin goes to the high shelf.

Step out onto the porch, grab the heirloom seed tin from under the tarp, bring it inside, and set it on the high kitchen shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead — humidity spike means mold on the heirloom seeds. Tin's on the porch bench under the tarp. Need to move it inside to the high shelf in the kitchen.

Check the south wall again. The wind is groaning.

watch his shadow in the doorway, counting the beats of the pain in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the seeds are dry for now, but if the roof leaks, the whole tin is ruined.

Checking now.

Open the porch door, step out into the wind and rain, inspect the south wall tarp batten by batten, re-seat any lifted corners, and add more stone weight to the leading edge.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west and rising. The south wall tarp's only held by timber strips and stones — if a corner lifts, the whole thing goes. Need to check every batten and re-weight the leading edge.
