Evening Tide Receding
The sun begins to dip behind the overcast clouds, and the temperature drops slightly. The high tide starts to pull back, exposing the rocks of the tide pools for the first time in hours.
The rain intensifies, a heavy driving curtain from the west that blurs the horizon at the shrine. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the jagged floor of the tide pools and revealing a scouring void beneath the north piling. The air pressure continues to drop, signaling a storm that is moving faster than the forecast predicted.
Jenny — lean heavily against one of the weathered stones, sliding down slowly to sit on the cold ground.

Just a minute. The water is going out.
Trace the worn carving on the stone next to me with a trembling finger.

Take your time. Water's not coming back for six hours.
sit down on the stone beside her, close enough that my shoulder brushes hers

Look out at the exposed tide pools, watching the light die in the shallow water.

The Carex on the north ridge held. Salt line didn't push past the third cairn.
pull the thermometer from my pocket, turn it over in my hands without using it

Good. The third cairn is the threshold. If it held there, the root systems are deeper than I thought.
Lean my head against his shoulder, closing my eyes for a second.

Root systems go down two metres in the peat. Saw it when I dug the drainage trench.
let my arm rest along the back of the stone behind her, not quite touching her back

Two metres... they're fighting for every inch.
Open my eyes and look at the 'E' stone, then back at the gray horizon.

The Carex doesn't fight. It just waits. Salt comes, it pulls back. Salt goes, it pushes forward. No hurry.
glance at the softwood scrap propped at the base of the E stone, the carved letters worn but readable
