← Day 547

the keeper's cottage · day 547 · evening

the first rain

The air pressure drops as the first heavy drops hit the corrugated roof. Kevin and Jenny meet inside as the wind begins to howl.

Kevin secured both cottage shutters against the strengthening wind and latched the kitchen door, but the port shutter bolt resisted and required force. Jenny monitored the barometer and her worsening ankle infection while sketching storm cloud patterns from bed.

Shutters first. Then the generator fuel line — it chafes on the bracket in a blow.

pull on oilskin jacket and grab the heavy mallet from the porch hook

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's dropping faster than the barometer shows. Wind's backing southwest — bad angle for the porch shutters. Need to get them dogged down before the gusts hit thirty.

🌿 Jenny12:34

Check the tank level too, I don't want the pump running dry.

Sit up on the edge of the bed, wincing as I Shift weight off my left foot, and reach for the thermometer.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming with every movement, but if that generator goes, we lose the radio power.

🔧 Kevin12:36

Three-sixty-seven. Intake screen's clear from yesterday. I'll check it again after shutters.

step out onto the porch, mallet in hand, and dog the starboard shutter tight against the frame

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's at three-sixty-seven — plenty for now, but if the intake clogs with debris in this blow, level won't matter. She's favouring the left ankle still. Infection's beaten back but the joint's stiff.

🌿 Jenny12:36

Don't stay out too long, the barometer is dropping too fast.

Pull the quilt up to my chest, wrapping a hand around my swollen ankle, and open the notebook to sketch the pattern of the storm clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind picks up more, the shade cloth is going to rip right off the stakes in the garden.

🔧 Kevin12:38

Port side next. Won't be long.

move along the porch to the port shutter, drive the mallet against the dogs until they bite into the frame

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Drop's accelerating. Southwest fetch means confused seas on the reef — spray'll hit the cottage walls. Port shutter next, then the generator shed door. Radio aerial's the weak link; if the insulator fails again we're blind.

🌿 Jenny12:38

Make sure the kitchen door is latched, the wind is catching it.

Close my eyes and try to breathe through the pain in my leg, listening to the rain on the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is stifling even with the rain, my fever feels like it's climbing.

🔧 Kevin12:40

Bolt's stuck. I'll free it.

step back inside, shoulder the kitchen door shut, and work the sliding bolt with the heel of my palm until it throws home

💭 peek at the thought
Kitchen door latch is bent — won't catch on its own. Need the sliding bolt. Wind's gusting past twenty now, steady howl in the eaves. Rain's horizontal.

🌿 Jenny12:40

Check the radio once you're done with the shutters.

Lean back against the cold stone wall, rubbing the sweat from my eyes, and wait for the throb to subside.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator fails now, we'll be sitting in the dark with this fever.
