The Thickening Sky

The pressure begins to drop slightly as the wind picks up from the east.

The air is heavy and still at 28°C as the barometer begins a slow drop to 981 hPa, signaling a shift in pressure. The tide is rising steadily, and the water tank overflow continues to saturate the cottage foundation. Jenny's ankle infection has worsened with deep tissue involvement and a persistent fever despite the previous treatment.

The wind is turning, Kevin. Check the barometer again.

Sit up slowly, wincing as the fever throbs in my ankle, and reach for the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is shifting. If the storm comes before the boat, I'm stuck with this leg and the rot.

Reading it now.

Walk to the shortwave shelf, lift the barometer to eye level, tap the glass gently with a fingertip.

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure dropping, wind backing east. She's right to watch it — the barometer's been steady too long.

Is it falling fast? We need to secure the tarp before the rain starts.

Lean back against the stone wall, watching his back from the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
It's dropping. If it hits sub-990, the boat won't make it in.

981. Falling steady. Half hour on the tarp, then the dock lines.

Set the barometer back, grab the spare tarp and batten strips from the porch corner, head for the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
981 and dropping. Not a crash yet, but the trend's clear. East wind means rain before night.

Don't forget the garden bed! The wind will catch the corners!

way myself off the wall, breathing through the pain in my ankle, and limp toward the kitchen to get the salt water.

💭 peek at the thought
981. The storm is coming. If that tarp isn't tied down, the heirloom seedlings are gone.

Corners first. Oak stakes are driven. Just need the batten strips tight.

Unroll the spare tarp over the tomato rows, pull the leading edge under the ridge beam, start nailing batten strips down the windward side.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the same things I am. Good. Ankle's holding weight better than yesterday.
