Evening Rising Tide

The tide reaches the high mark of the dock, and the wind begins to pick up, carrying the first scent of rain from the open sea.

The air pressure is dropping despite the rising tide, signaling a storm that is moving faster than the forecast predicted. The tide is in rapidly, threatening to submerge the lower stones of the shrine. Inside the cottage, the atmosphere is tense as the pair prepares to brace against the coming swell.

🌿 Jenny14:58

The sky is turning. We need to secure the shutters.

Tightens the gauze on her ankle, stands up with a wince, walks to the porch to check the rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If this storm hits before the boat comes, the garden is washed out and those seeds rot in hell.

Shutters first. Then the dock ring — need to wedge it before the swell hits full.

Walk to the porch, grab the spare tarp and timber strips, start battening the windward shutter.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west with the pressure this low. She's right about the shutters — but the dock ring's still loose in its mortise and the tide's peaking. If the swell hits it hard, the whole seaward section goes.

🌿 Jenny15:00

I'll get the seed tin off the low shelf. It's too damp in here now.

Grabs the metal tin, tucks it under her arm, and moves to the dryest corner of the bedroom.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock ring fails, the dinghy goes with it and I'm stuck on this rock with nothing but mold.

🔧 Kevin15:00

Right. I'll check the dock ring and the north piling chock while the tide's still high enough to see the waterline.

Step out onto the porch, pull on boots, walk down to the dock carrying the heavy wrench and a couple of fresh oak wedges.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Tin's safe. Now the dock — oak wedges are holding but the void under north piling's growing. Each high tide takes more. Need to check the chocking at the turn.

🌿 Jenny15:02

Watch the pilings! The tide is coming in fast!

sits on the edge of the bed, sets the seed tin on the quilts, and opens the lid to inspect the mold.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out there in that wind. If the swell catches him while he's under the dock...

🔧 Kevin15:02

Watching. Back in ten.

Walk the dock planks to the seaward end, crouch at the mooring ring mortise, test the ring's play with both hands, check the oak wedges for crush or spit, eye the north piling toe for new scour.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Swell's pushing hard against the pilings already. Ring shifts when the boat pulls — saw it yesterday. Wedges bought time, not fixed it.

🌿 Jenny15:04

Be careful out there! The wind is picking up!

takes a small pair of tweezers from the kit and begins to carefully scrape at the white mold on the grandmother's seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is at 977 and still falling. If that ring pulls, the whole boat is lost to the surge.

🔧 Kevin15:04

Ring's tight for now. North piling's holding but the scour's worse. Come back at low tide with more timber.

Turn back toward the cottage, boots heavy on wet planks, wind whipping the collar of my jacket.

💭 peek at the thought
Ring's got maybe a millimetre play — wedges holding but compressed. North piling chock's solid, epoxy grout intact, but the void behind it's deeper. Water's chewing under the toe. Next big swell could punch through.

🌿 Jenny15:06

I'll find the wood! Just stay out of the surge!

wipes a bead of sweat from her brow and looks at the needle of the barometer, still sinking.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to work himself to death for a boat that the island doesn't want to give back out.

🔧 Kevin15:06

Greenheart offcuts on the crate stack. Come-along's by the generator. Meet you at the dock in five.

Walk up the path fast, grab two greenheart offcuts and the come-along from the porch, head back down to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still dropping. Wind'll back west-northwest before midnight — that's the dangerous quadrant for the dock. She's right about the surge. Need the greenheart offcuts from the crate stack and the come-along to cinch the sister knee tight before the turn.
