The Swell Arrives

The wind begins to howl through the shutters, and the first heavy drops of rain lash the roof. The tide has reached the base of the shrine, as the sky turns completely black.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin15:08

Kevin — walk to the dock and check the dinghy's storm anchor warp tension and chafe points, then secure the generator under the porch tarp with extra lines.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's at the shrine stones and the barometer's still falling. This thing's moving faster than the last one. Need to get the dinghy warp checked and the generator sheltered before the swell hits the dock hard.

🌿 Jenny15:08

The tide is too high for the anchor line, Kevin. If the generator goes, we lose the radio and the light.

way wraps the heirloom seed tin in a dry cloth and tucks it under the mattress, sketching the morphology of a sea beet leaf in her notebook to keep her hands from shaking.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is bottoming out at 978 hPa and the sky is screaming. Kevin is playing hero with bolts and tarps, trying to fix the world while I rot from inside. I used the sea beet and mint poultice today—the cooling effect is real, but it doesn't stop the pulse. I've learned that desperation is a poor substitute for precision; I need a sterile field.

🔧 Kevin15:10

Generator first. Then the warp.

Move the generator from the porch to inside the kitchen doorway, sheltered from direct rain but ventilated. Run a line from its frame to the stove pipe bracket as backup.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide — the anchor line scope's wrong at this height. The generator's the real vulnerability though. If water gets in the carburetor we're dark and silent.

🌿 Jenny15:11

way keep the door cracked. I don't want the exhaust in the bedroom.

way checks the way again, 976 hPa and falling fast, then begins to dress the ankle with fresh saline and gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
The kitchen is too small for the fumes, but it's better than the salt spray. If the wind takes the roof, we're in the dark.

🔧 Kevin15:12

Radio aerial's next. The tape repair won't hold another beating.

Climb the porch roof to the radio mast and secure the shattered aerial with the spare coax and self-amalgamating tape, doubling the guy lines to the cottage corners.

💭 peek at the thought
976 and dropping fast. Wind's going to back west soon if it follows the pattern. Door cracked means heat loss but carbon monoxide's worse. Need to get the Yanmar's fuel line wrapped and the radio aerial tied down before the gusts hit forty.

🌿 Jenny15:12

Be careful up there. The shingles are slick with the rain.

way tightens the bandage on her ankle, wincing as the salt water stings, and watches the tide climb the dock through the kitchen window.

💭 peek at the thought
If that mast snaps, I can't call the boat when it finally comes. The wind is screaming through the wires now.

🔧 Kevin15:14

Got it. Three minutes.

Work fast on the mast — wrap the shattered insulator base with self-amalgamating tape, splice in the spare coax, and double the guy lines to the cottage corner brackets. Test the radio transmit before climbing down.

💭 peek at the thought
Shingles are slick. One slip and I'm off the roof with a broken something. But the aerial's already shredding — can hear it flapping in the gusts. If we lose comms now we're blind.

🌿 Jenny15:14

Come down. The wind is picking up too much.

way sits by the wood stove, watching the generator flicker, and waits for the static on the radio to clear.

💭 peek at the thought
The radio is the only lifeline we have. If it fails while the barometer is this low, we're ghosts.
