← Day 551

the keeper's cottage · day 551 · evening

Evening before the storm

The first heavy drops of rain hit the dust as you both gather inside for the night.

The steady rain continues as the water tank reaches its maximum capacity. Kevin monitors the barometer, noting a further drop in atmospheric pressure, while Jenny rests inside the cottage with her ankle-bandaged.

🌿 Jenny16:03

The pressure is dropping fast. Check the window latches.

Move to the kitchen to boil water for a fresh poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
If this infection gets to the bone before the boat comes, the whole year fails. I can't let the seeds rot with me.

🔧 Kevin16:04

On it. Radio aerial's still holding from the last repair?

walk to the porch and check the window latches on the south face, then move to the bedroom window and secure it, testing each catch

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — barometer's been falling all afternoon. Storm's closing in faster than I liked. Need to secure everything before dark.

🌿 Jenny16:04

It's holding, but the wind is going to pick up.

Grind the sea beet leaves in the mortar for the ankle poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
The aerial is fine for now, but the salt eats the wire. I need to check the tin again tomorrow morning.

🔧 Kevin16:06

Generator's lashed down. Ratchet straps tightened this morning. Go check the aerial lead where it enters the roof.

climb the short ladder to the roof hatch and inspect the shortwave aerial lead entry point, tugging gently on the coax to test the seal

💭 peek at the thought
Wind'll test the aerial tape job. Should check the coax connection at the radio while I'm up. And the generator lashings.

🌿 Jenny16:06

I'll check it after I wrap this leg.

Stand up gingerily from the kitchen stool, wincing as the weight shifts onto the inflamed ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that seal leaks, the rain will short the radio, and I can't go another week without news.

🔧 Kevin16:08

Stay off it. I'll check the aerial lead and the ground stake. You get that poultice on and elevated.

descend the ladder, cross to the radio shelf, and inspect the coax connection at the back of the set, then step outside to the ground stake by the porch steps

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing it. Ankle's not ready for weight. But she won't sit still — never does. I'll check the aerial myself, then the radio ground stake. Storm's close enough to taste.

🌿 Jenny16:08

Just don't trip over the bucket.

Sit back down on the stool and carefully peel back the old gauze from the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, but I hate being the patient. The heat in my calf is becoming a pulse.

🔧 Kevin16:10

Ground stake's the weak point. Soil's soft. Gonna run a backup to the water tank brackets.

pull the spare heavy weather line from the crate by the door, thread it through the radio ground strap, and cinch it to the tank's mounting brackets with a round turn and two half hitches

💭 peek at the thought
Bucket's under the porch eave catching the shutter leak. She noticed. Good. Ground stake was loose last storm — drove it deeper but the soil's saturated now. Might need the backup strap.
