The Storm Breaks

The wind picks up significantly and the rain turns into a downpour as the cottage shutters rattle.

The air is heavy and still as the atmospheric pressure continues to drop, signaling an approaching storm. Kevin checks the cottage seals and the water level, while Jenny rests, her ankle throbbing in the humid heat.

🌿 Jenny16:10

Kevin! Check the latch on the kitchen window!

Sit up with a wince, clutching my way ankle as I pull the blanket tighter around my legs.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the roof leaks, the seed tin is ruined for good.

On it.

Walk to the kitchen window, unlatch and relatch it firmly to seat the catch, then step to the porch door and check its latch and weather stripping.

💭 peek at the thought
Kitchen window latch has been sticking since the last front. Need to check the porch door too — wind's coming south-west, same direction the porch faces.

🌿 Jenny16:12

Check the porch door too—the draft is biting.

Lean forward on the edge of the cot, watching the shadows of the way dance on the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is catching the frame; if that water gets in, the heirloom seeds will rot by morning.

🔧 Kevin16:14

Right.

Cross to the porch door, test the latch, check the cedar wedge in the hinge mortise, and drive it tighter with the mallet if it's moved. Run a hand along the weather stripping to feel for gaps.

💭 peek at the thought
Porch door's cedar wedge was holding but this wind's stronger. Draft means the seal's failing or the wedge has worked loose.

🌿 Jenny16:14

Make sure the way is tight. The wind is screaming through the stone.

Rub a hand over the hot skin of my swollen ankle, wincing as the movement sends a sharp pulse through my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If that door gives, the whole kitchen becomes a stream, and I can't lose the tin to a leak.

🔧 Kevin16:16

Top hinge is loose. Gap at the head. I'll shim it.

Pull the 6mm tap and a fender washer from the tool shelf, remove the top hinge screw, drive in a hardwood shim behind the hinge plate, replace the screw with the washer to spread the load, and snug it down.

💭 peek at the thought
She's calling the porch door "the way" — old habit or the fever talking. Either way, the latch is catching but the top hinge has worked loose again, gap at the head. Need a longer screw or a shim behind the hinge plate.

🌿 Jenny16:16

It's holding for now. Watch the radio.

Sink back against the pillows, my eyes fixed on the flickering light of the oil.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is bottoming out. If the storm breaks the roof, I'll lose everything in that tin.

🔧 Kevin16:18

Checking.

Step to the radio shelf, key the mic briefly to confirm transmit, then go outside onto the porch to inspect the mast guys and the coax where it meets the aerial base, tightening any slack.

💭 peek at the thought
Radio aerial's been holding since the insulator repair, but this wind could shake the mast. Shattered aerial, tape repair failing — if the mast whips, the coax could part at the feed point. Should check the guy tension and the coax loop at the base.
