The Wind Shifts North

The tide is beginning to turn, and the wind picks up, rattling the loose shutter on the cottage wall.

The air is heavy and humid as the flat sky thickens with grey-streaked clouds. The barometer continues its slow descent to 984 hPa, signaling a shift in the weather. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the lower stones of the dock while the pair works to secure the cottage before the boat arrives.

🌿 Jenny16:43

(To herself) Not today. Not yet.

Limps to the window to wedge the shutter shut, then returns to the table to area the sea beet and mint for the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If that storm hits before the boat comes, the seedlings are gone.

Leave the ladder. I'll wedge it from outside.

walk to the cottage wall and wedge the shutter shut with a timber offcut

💭 peek at the thought
Shutter's been loose since the last front. She's moving better than yesterday but shouldn't be on that ladder. Wind's backing west — swell'll hit the dock different in an hour.

🌿 Jenny16:44

Be careful. The rocks are slick.

Watches him through the glass, then returns to crushing the sea beet leaves and mint for the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked in that rain. The barometer is already screaming at me.

🔧 Kevin16:46

Boots have grip. Back inside.

wedge the timber tighter against the shutter, test it with a shoulder, then walk back to the porch door

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Algae on the north face holds water like grease. But the shutter bangs every thirty seconds and she needs rest more than I need dry boots.

🌿 Jenny16:46

(Quietly) Close the door. The draft is coming in.

Limps to the door to pull it shut, then sits back down to finish the sea beet and mint.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's stubborn. My ankle is throbbing in time with the wind.

🔧 Kevin16:48

Seal's blown. I'll stuff it after the dock check.

pull the door shut firm, latch it, then walk down the porch steps toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Draft means the porch seal's gone again. Swell's pushing air through the gap. She's favoring the left side still — ankle's stiffening in the damp.

🌿 Jenny16:48

Don't stay out too long. The tide is turning.

Watches him disappear into the grey, then returns to crushing the sea beet and mint for the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked. The barometer is already screaming.

🔧 Kevin16:50

Back before the swell builds.

walk down the path to the dock, scanning the lashings and the mooring ring as I approach

💭 peek at the thought
Tide turns in twenty minutes. Swell'll be hitting the seaward pilings by then. Need to check the lashings and the ring before the load comes on.

🌿 Jenny16:50

The pressure is dropping fast. Check the lines.

Limps to the porch, leaning heavily on the frame to watch him work the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is turning too quickly. If that boat doesn't come, I'm in trouble.

🔧 Kevin16:52

Starboard spring's the weak point. Ring's wedges are holding but the mortise is punky.

test the starboard spring tension, then haul on the doubled stern line to check the ring movement in its mortise

💭 peek at the thought
She read the barometer. 983 and falling. Lines are doubled but the starboard spring's chafing where it leads over the gunwale. Ring's held by oak wedges but the mortise timber's softening — felt it give last storm.
