The Weight of the Air

Kevin stands on the dock, watching the first heavy drops of rain hit the salt- wood. Jenny sits on a coiled rope, wrapping her ankle in a fresh cloth as the wind picks up from the west.

The rain intensifies into a heavy downpour from the west, turning the horizon to grey. The tide is receding rapidly, leaving the rocks exposed but the dock slick with algae. Kevin secures the dinghy against the rising wind and current while Jenny retreats to the cottage to manage her swelling ankle and the rising humidity.

🌿 Jenny16:21

The way is bottoming, Kevin. Get the dinghy lines doubled before the rain turns horizontal.

Winces as she tightens the wrap and looks at the grey horizon.

💭 thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if it hits 975, the garden will be lost to the salt spray.
🔧 Kevin16:22

Copy. Bow and stern doubled, chafe gear on. Storm anchor ready if she needs it.

walk to the dinghy and inspect the current mooring lines, then start doubling the bow line with the heavy weather line coiled on the dock

💭 thought
She's right. Barometer's at 983 and steady but the wind's backing west and the rain's already heavy. The swell will build fast once the tide turns. Need to double the bow and stern lines, check the chafe points, and get the storm anchor set if the dinghy's going to ride this out.
🌿 Jenny16:22

Check the barometer again when you're done. I need to know exactly how much time we have.

Stands heavily on her good leg and limps toward the cottage door.

💭 thought
He's focused on the ropes, but the barometer is screaming. I need to check the seeds.
🔧 Kevin16:24

Will do. Go on inside, I'll holler the reading.

finish doubling the bow line with a round turn and two half hitches, then move to the stern line to double it the same way

💭 thought
She's tracking the pressure same as me. Smart. The barometer's right there on the porch rail — I'll read it when I finish the lines and call it out. She doesn't need to hobble back out here.
🌿 Jenny16:24

I'm checking the tin. The high shelf is getting too damp.

Steps into the cottage and closes the door against the rising wind.

💭 thought
The air is getting heavy. If that pressure drops any further, the heirloom seeds are the only thing that matters.
🔧 Kevin16:26

(nothing — she's already inside)

finish doubling the stern line, check both chafe points where the lines run over the gunwale, then walk to the porch rail and read the barometer

💭 thought
The seed tin's been fighting damp since the last blow. If she's moving it, she's thinking ahead — which means she's thinking we stay. Good.
🌿 Jenny16:26

It's 978 and dropping, Kevin! Get the seeds off the deck!

Clutches the tin of seeds to her chest, her ankle throbbing in sync with the wind.

💭 thought
It's at 978 and it's falling faster than the tide. If it hits 970, the garden is gone.
🔧 Kevin16:28

On it. Get inside.

sprint to the garden shade cloth, rip the corners free from the oak stakes, bundle the cloth with the seedling trays underneath and haul the lot toward the cottage porch

💭 thought
Nine seventy-eight. Dropping five millibars in minutes. That's not a front — that's a bomb. The tin in her hands is the heirloom stock. Everything else on deck goes in the water or the cottage. Now.
🌿 Jenny16:28

Watch out for the swell! The dock is slick!

Rushes to the door, watching him struggle with the weight of the trays.

💭 thought
He's moving too fast for that ankle. The wind is going to rip the salt off the seedlings.
🔧 Kevin16:30

Got it. Door.

crab-walk the last metres to the porch, shoulders braced against the wind, shove the bundled trays and cloth through the door first, then follow and kick it shut behind me

💭 thought
Swell's already hitting the dock hard. Planking's slick as grease. One wrong step and I'm in the drink with the trays. Keep the load low, feet wide, don't rush the last three metres.

The Pressure Drops

The rain is now constant lashing. The tide is out, exposing the slippery dock and the waterlogged crate that needs to be moved before the tide returns.
