The Pressure Drops

The rain is now constant lashing. The tide is out, exposing the slippery dock and the waterlogged crate that needs to be moved before the tide returns.

The rain intensifies from the west as the tide falls, exposing the rocks near the dock. Kevin secures the dinghy and checks the dock against the rising swell while Jenny stays in the cottage to manage her swelling and the dropping pressure.

🔧 Kevin16:30

Kevin — walk to the waterlogged crate on the dock, get a solid grip, and drag it clear of the jetty onto the beach above the high-water mark.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's dropped another point since I last looked. Crate's heavy dry — three times that waterlogged. Need it off the dock before the tide turns and makes the planks a skating rink. Jenny's inside, ankle up. I'll move it myself.

🌿 Jenny16:32

Keep it high up, Kevin. The tide's coming in harder than the forecast last time.

Jenny limps toward the kitchen, clutching her swollen ankle, needing a fresh poultice of sea beet and mint.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is going to drop further; if that crate stays on the dock, the seeds inside will be lost to salt water.

Aye. Above the wrack line.

Heave the crate up the beach past the driftwood tangle, set it on the flattest ground above the high-water mark, then walk back to the dock to check the lashings on the dinghy.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Last spring tide took the forecast and laughed. Crate goes above the wrack line, not just above the dock.

🌿 Jenny16:34

Make sure it's tucked under the overhang. The way is coming from the west.

Jenny sits at the kitchen table, unwrapping the damp poultice from her ankle and beginning to bruise fresh sea beet and mint in the mortar.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than I can today. My ankle feels like it's being branded with hot iron.

🔧 Kevin16:34

Under the overhang. Got it.

Drag the crate the last few metres into the lee of the rock overhang, shove it flush against the back wall where the ground stays driest, then turn back toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
West wind drives spray horizontal. Overhang's the only dry ground on this beach.

🌿 Jenny16:36

Check the barometer on your way back. It's dropping fast.

Jenny grinds the sea beet and mint into a paste, wincing as the cold water hits the swollen skin of her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in two days, I'll be out of clean water before the infection reaches the bone.

🔧 Kevin16:36

Kevin — walk back to the cottage porch, glance at the barometer by the door, call out the reading.

💭 peek at the thought
She feels it in the ankle before the glass shows it. Barometer was 984 at the dock. If it's moving, the next low's closer than I thought.

🌿 Jenny16:38

982? It's going to be a miserable night.

Jenny applies the green paste to her ankle and wraps it tightly in a clean cloth, breathing through her teeth against the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
982 hPa. It's falling faster than I liked.
