Night watch at the porch

Rain has eased to a fine mist. The dinghy surges against its lines at the dock, the loose mooring ring trailing rope in the water. Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch with tin mugs of limpet broth, watching the barometer hold steady at 986 hPa. The wind is northerly now, cold on wet clothes. The supply boat is due in two days.

The tide is receding, exposing the slick rocks of the southern cove. The air is heavy with the humidity of the coming storm, and the pressure continues to drop. Kevin and Jenny work to finish the dock repairs before the water turns back in.

Doubler plate on the dock beam. Greenheart offcuts, stainless through-bolts. Low tide's in three hours. You want the drill or the wrench?

sip broth, eyes on the dinghy's bow jerking against the doubled lines

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's swung north. Cold on wet wool. Barometer holding at 986 means the low's passed but the swell's still pushing. Two days to the boat — if it comes. Mooring ring's gone from the mortise. Need a steel doubler plate through the beam before they try to tie up. Greenheart offcuts on the dock. Bolts in the crate. Half a day's work if the tide cooperates.

The wrench. I need to feel the bolts seating against the wood before the tide turns.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle shifts, and grab the heavy socket wrench from the tool roll on the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't fix that ring now, the surge will tear the whole assembly loose before the boat even hits the horizon.

🔧 Kevin17:02

Drill's charged. Bits in the roll. I'll cut the plate to length while you're at the mortise.

set mug down, stand, stretch the stiffness from my shoulders, walk to the dock with the greenheart offcut and the bow saw

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side still. Ankle's not right. But she's moving — that's something. She knows the torque by feel better than I do. Let her have the wrench.

🌿 Jenny17:04

Cut it an inch long. I'll trim the edges once it's bolted down.

Step out onto the porch, the wood slick under my bare feet, and crouch by the dinghy to inspect the trailing ring.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than I am today. I need to get these bolts aligned before the water comes back in.

🔧 Kevin17:04

Got it. Three bolt holes — centre and two offset. Pattern matches the old mortise.

measure the beam width with a carpenter's pencil, mark the greenheart offcut, start the bow saw cut, teeth biting into the dense grain

💭 peek at the thought
An inch long gives her room to work the mortise clean. She's thinking ahead — trim in place, flush to the beam. Smart. The ring's trailing, rope catching current. She'll see the chafe points I missed.

🌿 Jenny17:06

Keep the cut straight. I don't want any splintering when I torque it down.

Reach into the cold water to clear the debris from the mortise with a pocket knife, testing the ring's wobble.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is stubborn, but the greenheart will hold. I just need to get the plate flush against the beam.

🔧 Kevin17:06

Cut's tracking straight. Chisel's in the roll if the mortise needs cleaning.

finish the cut, blow sawdust from the kerf, test the plate against the beam — good fit, slight overhang on the ends

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — splinters under the plate mean uneven load. Greenheart's tough but brittle across the grain. Saw's sharp, cut's clean so far. She's got her hand in cold water clearing rot. Pocket knife won't do much for deep splintering. Should've brought the chisel.

🌿 Jenny17:08

Leave the overhang. I'll plane it back once it's set.

Hold the greenheart plate to the beam, mark the bolt holes with a pencil, and reach for the drill.

💭 peek at the thought
It's tight enough. If I can get the bolts through, the next surge won't pull the dock apart.
