Afternoon pressure drop

Kevin and Jenny are in the cottage. The barometer reads 993 hPa and falling fast. Rain hammers the roof. The dinghy strains against its three warps at the dock. They have the seed tin, the radio, and each other.

Kevin and Jenny worked together on the dock in the falling pressure, securing a spare warp to the north piling with two turns and a clove hitch. The line held under tension as the tide surged. Meanwhile, a rat slipped into the cottage pantry unnoticed.

🔧 Kevin20:26

Barometer's dropped five in two hours. Wind's backing southwest. Dock's going to take a beating on the next high tide — three hours out.

walk to the porch door and pull it open, leaning out to check the dinghy's motion against the warps

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer same as me. Three millibars in an hour. This isn't passing weather — it's settling in. The dock held last night but the south piling's mortise is splintered to hell and the oak wedges are all that's keeping the mooring ring in. If the wind shifts southwest like the advisory said, the fetch across the bay puts every bit of that swell straight onto the dock face. Three warps on the dinghy. Should be four. Should've run a breast line off the midships cleat to the north piling yesterday. Too late now.

🌿 Jenny20:27

Check the bow lines again. They're fraying against the wood.

Lean forward, wincing as my hip shifts, to watch the barometer needle drop.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock goes, the boat goes, and I'm stuck here with a rotting leg.

Bow line's on the list. You get back from the rail before the gust takes you.

step out onto the porch, bracing one hand on the doorframe, and walk to the starboard gunwale to inspect the bow line where it leads through the chock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The bow line's been sawing against the chock all night — new rope or not, salt and grit cut fast under this kind of load. And she's moving worse today. The ankle's hotter. She shouldn't be leaning over the porch rail in this wind.

🌿 Jenny20:28

The tide is coming in too fast for the dock to hold.

Reach for the seed tin on the high shelf to check the seal for condensation.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so worried about the boat, I'm worried about the moisture in that tin.

🔧 Kevin20:30

Tide's running early. Surge on top of the swell. South piling's the one that'll go first — mortise is splintered past epoxy.

grip the bow line at the chock, fingers testing the fibers where they disappear into the wood, then turn and scan the dock structure toward the south piling

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Spring tide on top of this pressure drop — water's already licking the sister knee on the north piling. South piling's mortise is the weak link; the ring's held by oak wedges and prayer. If the dock goes, the dinghy goes with it. And she's checking the seed tin seal like it's the most important thing on the island. It might be.

🌿 Jenny20:30

way move the extra lines to the pilings now while we can still shift weight.

ing up off the bench, favoring the ankle with a hiss, and limp toward the door to help him.

💭 peek at the thought
If that south way snaps, the whole dock shears into the sea.

🔧 Kevin20:32

Stay on the porch. I'll run the warp to the north piling first — it's the sounder one. You feed from the coil.

step down off the porch onto the dock planks, testing the first one with full weight before committing, and move toward the bow where the spare warp is coiled

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on a leg that needs two more days of rest minimum. The infection track hasn't cleared — I saw the red line creeping past the anklebone this morning. But she's right about the lines. The spare warp's coiled on the starboard gunwale. Another half-inch coil in the crate by the generator. If we lead them to the pilings direct, bypass the chocks, we buy the dock maybe six more hours of holding. If the pilings themselves don't walk.

🌿 Jenny20:32

I'm coming. way let me hold the end of the line.

Grabbing the doorframe for balance, hobbling to the way edge, and stepping out into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to go down on those slick planks if I don't help.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:34

Fine. But you slip, I'm not fishing you out — I'm too old for that swim. Take the bitter end. Pay it out slow. I'll make the turns at the piling.

uncoil the spare warp from the starboard gunwale, feed the bitter end back to her, and move along the dock toward the north piling base, stepping careful on the planks

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn as a seized bolt. The rain's coming horizontal now — she'll be soaked in ten seconds, ankle swelling in the boot, and if a gust catches her on these slick planks she goes over the side. But arguing wastes time we don't have. The north piling's sister joint held last storm. South one's the gamble. We lead the warp to the north piling base, clove hitch backed with two half-hitches, then run the second line to the south piling if the ring holds. If it doesn't, we lash to the sister knee itself.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:34

I've got it. Just watch the tension when you wrap it.

gripping the end of the rope with both hands, shifting my weight to the good leg, and moving toward the edge of the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is slicker than glass. If I fall, I'm really done.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:36

Two turns round the base. Then clove hitch, two half-hitches. Don't let the standing part run free — surge'll take your fingers.

reach the north piling, crouch at the base where the greenheart sister knee meets the original timber, and begin wrapping the warp around the piling below the knee, working the line down to sit clean on the wood

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the end. Good. The planks are slick with rain and spray — one wrong step and she's in the drink with a line wrapped on her wrist. North piling base is clear. The sister knee's bolted solid, greenheart plank through-bolted to the original timber. I'll run the warp round the base, two full turns before the hitch, take the load on the standing part. That way the knot never sees the full shock. Tide's pushing hard against the dock face now. Water's up to the lower bolt heads on the south piling ring.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:36

I'm holding the tension. Tell me when it's tight.

pulling back on the rope to keep it taut, bracing my hip against the railing, and watching the line disappear around the piling.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is rising too fast. If this doesn't hold, the whole dock is gone.
