The Calm Before the Surge

The tide reaches its peak as the first cold gust of wind picks up from the north, smelling of rain.

Kevin secured the heirloom seed tin inside his oilskin and brought it into the cottage while Jenny limped after, clutching the railing. The barometer continued its drop to 995 hPa as the tide fell. They moved the tin to the high porch shelf and doubled the dinghy warps against the rising swell.

🌿 Jenny20:20

Kevin, get the extra lines on the dinghy! The tide is turning too quickly!

Limps toward the dock, clutching the wooden railing for support while her ankle throbs in sync with the waves.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if this storm hits before the boat comes, the dinghy might be lost.

On it.

sprint to the dinghy, grab the coil of new half-inch three-strand from the crate, run a second bow line around the forward eye and back to the dock cleat with a round turn and two half hitches, then double the stern spring with the heavy we

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The tide's swinging hard against the wind and the dinghy's only on one bow line. If that parts she's gone before we can launch.

🌿 Jenny20:22

Check the own again! If it hits 990, we need to secure the garden tarp!

Leans against the salt air, watching the dinghy strain against the dock while the sea beet poultice on her ankle begins to itch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than I own could, but those rotten planks won't hold that much tension.

Checking.

turn back to the cottage porch, snatch the barometer off its nail, bring it to eye level against the grey light

💭 peek at the thought
She means the barometer. Nine ninety means the bottom's falling out. Garden tarp's only on oak stakes and twine — won't hold a real blow.

🌿 Jenny20:24

It's 994 and still falling! Get the seed tin off the porch, now!

Grabs the metal tin from the bench, her fingers white against the cold surface as she shifts her weight to her good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The needle is moving so fast it's a blur; this isn't just a summer squall.

🔧 Kevin20:24

Got it.

grab the heirloom seed tin from the porch shelf, shove it inside my oilskin jacket against my chest, head back toward the cottage door

💭 peek at the thought
Nine ninety-four and dropping fast. She's moving the seed tin before I even finish reading it. Smart. That tin's the only thing we can't replace.
