Evening Shelter

The rain intensifies against the tin roof. Kevin and Jenny sit in the small kitchen as the wind picks.

Kevin and Jenny walked to the old shrine as the evening air grew heavy with humidity. Jenny limped along the uneven path, clutching her swollen ankle while the tide receded. They discussed the upcoming supply boat while watching the barometer indicate a slow rise.

🔧 Kevin01:20

Barometer's still rising. Wind's backing though. South tarp'll take it first.

Pour coffee into the second tin mug and slide it across the table toward her.

💭 peek at the thought
The roof drumming louder now. Wind shifting — backing southwest if I read it right. She's quiet. Has been since the porch. The letter's still in her pocket, I know it is. I should check the south tarp before it tears loose. But I'm not moving from this table yet.

🌿 Jenny01:21

I'll check the stakes after I finish this coffee.

Jenny wraps her cold hands around the warm mug, wincing as her swollen ankle shifts against the chair leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tarp goes, the heirloom seeds are lost. I can't lose them now, not after all this work.

🔧 Kevin01:22

Don't rush. Coffee's hot. Tarp'll hold another hour.

Reach over and tighten the lid on the salt tin beside the stove, fingers brushing the gauze wrapper on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side. The swelling hasn't gone down like it should by now. Antibiotics should've knocked the heat out of it by day three. Either the dose wasn't enough or it's tracking deeper. I'll check it when she stands up — watch how she puts weight on it.

🌿 Jenny01:22

An hour isn't enough if the stakes pull.

Jenny takes a slow sip of the coffee, her eyes fixed on the grey blur where the garden used to be.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but the wind is shifting and I can feel it coming.

🔧 Kevin01:24

I'll go with you. Two pairs of hands on the stakes.

Drain the last of my coffee, set the mug down hard, and push back from the table.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The shade cloth anchors shredded last storm — coconut crab got to the lines. I patched with heavy twine and oak stakes but didn't double them. If the wind backs further west, the garden takes the full fetch off the bay. Should've reinforced yesterday. Should've done a lot of things yesterday.

🌿 Jenny01:24

way don't pull the ropes too hard.

Jenny stands up slowly, putting her weight on the good leg as she reaches for her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If he helps, he better be careful not to crush the seedlings. They're too fragile.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:26

I'll take the tension. You just point.

Grab the storm lantern from the hook by the door, strike the match, and hold the flame until the wick catches clean.

💭 peek at the thought
She's limping worse than this morning. The wince when she shifted weight — that's not surface infection anymore. Could be tracking up the tendon sheath. If it hits the joint she won't walk at all. Noted: check ankle properly when we're back inside. Noted: antibiotic course might need extending. Metronidazole's nearly gone.

🌿 Jenny01:26

Check the north ridge side first. The stakes are loose.

Jenny limps to the door, clutching her notebook to her chest as she steps out into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up now. If that tarp rips, the whole garden is a mess.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:28

North ridge first.

Step out behind her, lantern low, boots finding the slick path to the garden gate.

💭 peek at the thought
North ridge stakes were the ones I drove shallow — ground's thin there over bedrock. She noticed. She notices everything. Rain's driving horizontal now, cold for this latitude. Wind's steady thirty, gusting higher. Lantern throws a tight circle. Garden's a blur of flapping cloth and bent tomato stakes.

🌿 Jenny01:28

Watch out for the mud, it's getting deep.

Jenny flinches as a step hits her ankle, stopping to lean against the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is already howling through the ridge. I can see the way whipping out there.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:30

Take my arm.

Close the distance in two strides, offering my right elbow, lantern held high in my left.

💭 peek at the thought
That flinch was real. Not performative. She's hiding how bad it is — probably has been since the poultice stopped working. The wall's wet slate, cold through her shirt. I should've made her stay at the table. Too late now. Mud's ankle-deep on the path, clay-slick. One wrong placement and we both go down.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:30

way go slow. The stones are slick with moss.

Jenny wraps her hand around my arm, leaning her weight into me as she looks toward the shrine.

💭 peek at the thought
He's steady enough for right now. I can't afford falling on the ridge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:32

I've got you. Slow as you need.

Shorten my stride, plant each boot careful, lantern swinging steady between us.

💭 peek at the thought
Her grip's tight. Fingers digging into my forearm through the wool. She's looking at the shrine — the ridge stones just visible through the rain, the carved one with the 'E' and the softwood scrap beside it. 'I'm still here.' She read it. She knows I put it there. Hasn't said a word about it. The path climbs steep here, mud churned to slurry by weeks of weather. My boots have purchase. Hers don't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:32

Stay close to the wall. The path disappears.

Jenny takes a way step forward, eyes fixed on the dark silhouette of the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is catching the light now. If we can just make it to the stones before it really pours.
