Rest and Storm Watch

The overcast clouds finally break as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof. You sit at the table, listening to the wind increase and checking the water levels.

The rain has shifted from a heavy drizzle to a relentless drumming on the cottage roof. The overflow channel is clear, allowing the rainwater to gush away from the tank into the basin instead of pooling at the foundation. Inside, the air is thick with the smell of wet earth and the metallic tang of Jenny's infection as she rests her elevated leg.

🔧 Kevin01:34

Kevin — walk to the back wall and check the rain tank overflow channel, then step out onto the porch to verify the generator tarp's still battened down.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain on the roof means the barometer was right — front's pushing through. Need to check the tank overflow before it backs up into the foundation again, and make sure the generator's still breathing under the tarp.

🌿 Jenny01:35

Kevin, check the rain tank overflow - water's rising fast.

Get up slowly, massaging ankle as I move toward the back wall. Check water levels in tank - 394 liters still, but with this rain I need to make sure overflow's clear before it starts pouring in earnest.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's coming hard - need to secure everything before it gets worse. That ankle's gonna hate me if I'm up and down all night.

On it.

Grab the spade from against the garden wall and clear the overflow channel at the tank's back corner, digging out any sediment or debris blocking the runoff.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — tank was at 394, another hour of this and it'll top off. Overflow channel clogged last month and soaked the foundation. Need to clear it now before the real rain hits.

🌿 Jenny01:36

Watch for the silt, it's packed tight in there.

Lean against the whitewashed stone wall, resting my ankle up on a crate while watching the rain start to hammer against the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
If that channel clogs, the whole tank will spill over and I can't afford to lose a drop of fresh water now.

🔧 Kevin01:38

Kevin — drop the spade, pull the 12mm auger bit from the tool roll and work it into the overflow channel to break up the packed silt, then flush with a bucket of seawater from the tide pools.

💭 peek at the thought
Silt packs like cement in that channel. Spade'll bounce off it. Need the hand trowel — wait, snapped the neck off it yesterday. Cedar shims or the auger bit'll have to do.

🌿 Jenny01:38

Make sure you get the bottom of the pipe, the silt's like clay there.

Winince as the weight shifts, pressing hand to my swollen ankle while I watch the rain quicken.

💭 peek at the thought
He's faster than I am today. If that channel doesn't clear, the garden is going to be a swamp by morning.

🔧 Kevin01:40

Kevin — walk to the porch, retrieve the old coax cable, strip back the sheath at one end to expose the braid and center conductor, feed it down the overflow pipe to punch through the clay plug at the bottom.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows that pipe better than I do — watched her dig it out last storm while I was coaxing the Yanmar. Auger's only 12mm, pipe's 50. Won't reach the bottom. Need something longer, flexible. The old coax cable on the porch — shield's shot but the center conductor's solid copper, three meters at least.

🌿 Jenny01:41

Watch for the water flow once it breaks through.

Lean heavily on the doorframe, watching the infection pulse in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
That's a smart use of the scrap. If he can clear that blockage, I won't have to worry about the tank overflowing in the middle of the night.
