Evening Storm Watch

The rain turns to a steady downpour as the tide rises against the dock. You and Jenny gather inside, the smell of damp wood and drying herbs filling the small room.

The heavy, humid air signaled a coming storm as the pressure began to drop rapidly. Kevin and Jenny retreated to the cottage as the wind picked up, tending to Jenny's persistent ankle infection while preparing for the surge.

🌿 Jenny05:39

I can't do the barometer again tonight. I need to eat something.

Limp toward the stove and reach for the pot of limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm starving and my leg is throbbing. I can't focus on the weather if I can't stand up.

🔧 Kevin05:39

Eat. I'll keep an ear on the set.

ladle limpet broth into two tin mugs and set one beside Jenny, then take the other for myself and lean against the porch frame listening to the radio hiss

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. We both need food. The limpets are ready, the broth's hot, and the radio's just static anyway. Let her eat first — I'll check the aerial once the squall eases.

🌿 Jenny05:40

The pressure is dropping too fast. It's going to hit us by morning.

way heavily at the kitchen table and wrap both hands around the warm mug.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always hovering with that radio, like the static is the only thing talking back now.

🔧 Kevin05:40

Aye. South piling won't take another night like this.

finish my mug in two swallows, set it down, and pull on my oilskin jacket

💭 peek at the thought
She's read the barometer same as me. 975 and falling steady. By morning we'll be in the teeth of it. Dock's holding for now but the south piling's got maybe one more blow before she gives. Should've sistered it proper last low tide.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:42

Just check the moorings twice. The tide is already at the wall.

Take a slow sip of the broth and wince as the movement shifts the ankle brace.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock goes, the boat stays away and I'm stuck here with nothing but weeds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:42

I'll walk the lines now. You stay off that ankle.

step out onto the porch into the driving rain, hood up, and make for the dock along the slippery path, flashlight beam cutting low across the water

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Tide's lapping the garden wall already. If the surge comes on top of this high water the dock takes the full hit unshielded. Moorings are doubled but the chafe points are fresh from last storm. Need eyes on them before dark fully settles.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:44

Jenny — set the mug down and lean back, watching his flashlight beam flicker through the rain from the safety of the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's the only one who knows how to survive a storm. I'm the one who knows what's actually growing in the mud he's walking through.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:44

(shouting back toward the porch) North line's chafing on the ring! Need to ease it or re-lead!

fight the wind to the dock edge, grab the north mooring line where it leads through the iron ring, and heave slack to shift the chafe point, boots sliding on wet timber

💭 peek at the thought
Light's swinging wild in the gusts. Dock's moving — not just riding, *working*. The port piling's singing under load, that low groan means the sister knee's taking weight. Moorings are tight but the north line's chafing fresh on the ring. Another hour of this surge and it'll saw through.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:46

Watch your footing! Just get it centered!

Stand up slowly, gripping the porch railing for support to see where he is.

💭 peek at the thought
If he slips and goes over, I can't exactly jump in after him with this leg.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:46

Centered. Chafe point's on fresh lay. South piling's holding.

make fast the line with a quick hitch, then turn and brace against the rail back toward the porch, flashlight sweeping the dock planks for the safest return path

💭 peek at the thought
She's out on the porch in this blow. Stubborn. Ankle can't take a fall on these boards. Line's centered now — chafe point's moved to fresh rope. South piling's still groaning but the oak wedges are holding the ring mortise. Dock's riding the surge now instead of fighting it. That's something.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:47

Get back inside before the surge hits. The barometer is screaming.

Watch him get back to the porch, then turn back to the kitchen to check the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the line held for now. The wind is picking up speed in the way.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:47

Coming in.

climb the porch steps two at a time, shoulder through the door, and latch it hard against the wind, dripping on the flagstones

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The surge is building — can feel it in the timber under my boots, that deep heave before the big water hits. Barometer's dropped another notch since I looked last. Radio's just static anyway. Nothing to hear but the storm coming.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:48

You're soaking. Get those clothes off before you catch a chill.

Reach for a dry towel on the rack and hold it out to him.

💭 peek at the thought
Now we're trapped in here together. The air is too thick.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:48

Thanks.

peel off the oilskin and hang it on the peg, take the towel rough and quick over hair and face, then shrug into the dry wool shirt draped over the chair back

💭 peek at the thought
Hands are cold, oilskin's heavy with rain. She's holding the towel out like it's nothing, like her ankle ain't throbbing, like she didn't just stand on the porch in a rising gale watching me. The radio's dead behind her — static and the storm.
