the keeper's cottage · day 565 · night

The Storm Breaks

The wind howls through the eaves as the first heavy rain lashes against the roof. Inside, the lamp flickers as the cottage groans under the pressure change.

The air is heavy and still, smelling of salt and coming rain. The tide is pulling away from the shore, slowly exposing the slick, dark rocks of the southern tide pools. Inside the cottage, the rhythmic drip from the leaky shutter into the bucket marks the passing minutes as the humidity settles into the floorboards.

🌿 Jenny05:49

Check the window latches, Kevin. The wind is shifting.

Tighten the ankle brace and wince at the sharp pain.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this storm hits hard, the garden wall will be washed out.

On it.

Walk to the kitchen window, test the latch, then move to the porch door and secure the hook-and-eye, listening for any change in the wind direction.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's backing west — that'll drive the swell straight at the dock face. Window latches first, then the porch door, then I need eyes on the mooring lines before the tide peaks.

🌿 Jenny05:51

Put the bucket under the wood stove, just in case.

Reach for the notebook and move the grandmother's tin to the center of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If the roof leaks, the seed tin will be ruined. I can't lose those.

🔧 Kevin05:51

Got it.

Grab the galvanized bucket from the porch and set it under the wood stove where the pipe meets the ceiling, then glance at the tin on the table without touching it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead — stove pipe leaks when the wind drives rain horizontal. The tin on the table means she's planning something, maybe finally sorting those heirloom packets.

🌿 Jenny05:53

I'm going to try and eat something. I can't fight a fever on an empty stomach.

Limp toward the stove and check the remaining limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks at them like they're just another chore to manage, not a legacy.

🔧 Kevin05:53

I'll put the kettle on. Doxycycline due?

Fill the kettle from the tank tap, set it on the stove, and pull two tin mugs from the shelf while watching her move.

💭 peek at the thought
Fever's climbing if she's admitting she can't fight it. Limpets are protein and iron — good call. I'll heat water for tea too, get the doxycycline down her if it's time.

🌿 Jenny05:55

Not yet. Give me ten minutes.

Carefully spoon the remaining limpets into a bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
He's treating me like a patient again. I'm a botanist, not a convalescent.

🔧 Kevin05:55

Back in ten.

Pull on oilskin and boots, step out onto the porch, and walk down the path to the dock with the headlamp beam cutting through the driven rain.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes. That's my window to check the dock lines before the tide peaks and the wind really gets its teeth in.
