opening the crate

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage kitchen table with the heavy crate between them. The air is thick with humidity as they prepare tools to pry the lid off.

Kevin pried open the waterlogged crate with a crowbar, the rotten wood giving way without splintering the contents. Inside they found tinned provisions and new rope, both salvageable. The crowbar's tip snapped off during the effort, worn thin by salt and use.
