MIDDAY

The tide is at its lowest, revealing the salt-crusted crate trapped in the surf.

Kevin and Jenny successfully recovered the heavy salt-crusted crate from the surf at low tide. Kevin used the crowbar to break the suction from the rocks while Jenny provided the line and helped haul it up the rock shelf to the dock.

🌿 Jenny07:13

The crate. It's fully exposed. I'm going down to get it.

Limp toward the dock, leaning heavily on a driftwood crutch.

💭 peek at the thought
I can see it from here. That crate is practically begging to be hauled in before the tide turns and drags it back into the deep. My ankle is throbbing, but I can't just leave it.

🔧 Kevin07:13

Wait. Let me get the crowbar and rope first.

Walk to the workshop corner, grab the crowbar and coil of half-inch rope, then follow her down to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too fast on that ankle. The sand's slick at low tide and the crate's heavier than it looks — waterlogged wood and whatever's inside. If she turns it wrong, she's back in the brace for another month.

🌿 Jenny07:15

way then. The water won't stay out.

Stand at the edge of the dock, watching the waves lick the rocks.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so methodical while the tide is moving. If that water comes back too fast, those seeds are lost to the salt.

🔧 Kevin07:15

You hold the line. I'll get the crate.

Tie one end of the rope to the dock cleat, coil the rest, pick up the crowbar, and climb down the ladder to the exposed rocks where the crate sits.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide. Comes in fast here. But she's not stable enough to lever a crate through breaking surf on one leg. I'll do the heavy work; she can spot and sort.

🌿 Jenny07:17

Be careful. The rocks are slick.

Grip the rope tight, shifting my weight to my good foot to watch him work.

💭 peek at the thought
If he gets stuck down there, the swell will Take both of us. I need to keep the line taut, but my leg is screaming at me.

🔧 Kevin07:17

Got it.

Work down the rocks to the crate, testing each step before committing weight. Circle it once to see how it's wedged, then get the crowbar under the nearest corner.

💭 peek at the thought
Rocks are slick. Swell's pushing into the channel. One bad step and I'm in the water with a crowbar. Move slow, test each foot.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:19

Pull steady. Don't let it slip.

Lean back into the rope, ready to take the weight the moment it moves.

💭 peek at the thought
It's wedged deep in the silt. If he pries too hard, the wood might snap, and then grandmother's seeds are gone for good.

🔧 Kevin07:19

Ready. Heave on three. One — two — three.

Drive the crowbar deep under the corner, lock my arms, and drive upward with my legs to break the suction, then drag the crate toward the ladder.

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's wedged tight in a rock cradle. Barnacles on the bottom — it's been here a while. Need to break the suction first, then slide it toward the ladder. Rope's on the cleat; she's got tension. One good heave.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:21

(Grunt of effort) I've got you! Pull it in!

Heave the rope back with a sharp, rhythmic pull, bracing my shoulder against the dock piling.

💭 peek at the thought
There it is. The sound of the suction breaking is the best thing I've heard all day. Just get it to the ladder before the tide turns.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin07:21

Coming. Watch the corner — sharp barnacles.

Keep dragging the crate up the rock shelf toward the ladder, crowbar hooked under the lip for control, feet planted wide on the slick stone.

💭 peek at the thought
Suction broke. Crate's moving — heavy, waterlogged, but moving. Sand and grit grinding underneath. Keep it coming before the next swell lifts it sideways. She's got the line solid.
