The Storm Breaks

The wind finally picks up, rattling the radio mast as the first heavy drops of rain hit the cottage roof.

Kevin lanced and drained Jenny's infected ankle, the procedure painful but necessary. The wound released a significant amount of pus, and Kevin cleaned it thoroughly with saline before packing it with fresh gauze and reapplying the sea beet-mint poultice. Jenny took her doxycycline dose with water, and her fever held at 39.4°C.

🌿 Jenny13:32

(A sharp, pained hiss) Not yet.

Sit up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and reach for the flashlight to check the spread of the redness.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is late, and if the surge hits hard, the dinghy will go before I can reach it.

🔧 Kevin13:33

Let me see.

walk over to her, crouch down, and hold the flashlight steady so the beam hits her ankle directly

💭 peek at the thought
She's up and moving on that ankle. The redness spread overnight — I can see it from here. Barometer's still falling, storm's building, and she's checking her own wound by flashlight instead of waking me. Stubborn.

🌿 Jenny13:33

(Gritting my teeth) Don't touch it.

Pull back the damp-soaked bandage with trembling fingers, exposing the angry, red streak of infection to the light.

💭 peek at the thought
It's moving faster than it did yesterday; the heat isradi off the skin.

🔧 Kevin13:35

How long since the last dose?

stay crouched, keeping the light steady on her ankle, not reaching for it

💭 peek at the thought
She won't let me touch it but she'll show me. That streak's tracking upward — lymphangitis. She's burning up. We're two days from the supply boat if it comes at all, and the radio's been dead quiet. I need to lance and drain if there's pus, hit it hard with what's left of the antibiotics, and keep her off it entirely.

🌿 Jenny13:35

(Voice thin and dry) Six... maybe own.

Look away from the beam, staring at the shadows on the cottage wall while the wind howls against the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
It was six hoursization, but the fever is making me lose track of the light.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:37

Temperature first. Then the rest of the doxy.

stand, go to the medical kit on the shelf, pull out the thermometer and the doxycycline blister pack, bring them back to her

💭 peek at the thought
Six hours, maybe more. She's lost track. The metronidazole blister pack is empty, doxycycline's got maybe a couple doses left if she hasn't missed any. That red line's creeping past her ankle toward the calf — sepsis risk is real. I need to check her temperature, get the remaining antibiotics in her, and decide if we're cutting it open tonight or waiting for the boat that might not come.

🌿 Jenny13:37

(A weak whisper) Just get it over with.

Take the thermometer with a shaking hand and place it under my tongue, ignoring the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My head is too hot to think about the boat, only the heat in the leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:39

Keep it there. Breathe through your nose.

sit on the edge of the bed beside her, one hand on the mattress for balance, watching the thermometer, the other hand resting on my knee — not touching her ankle

💭 peek at the thought
She's deferring to me on her own body. That's not like her. Fever's driving this — she's too tired to fight. Thermometer will tell the story. If it's over 39, we're in trouble deeper than antibiotics can fix alone. The wind's tearing at the mast guys; rain's hitting sideways now. Boat's not coming tomorrow in this.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:39

(Muffled around the thermometer) Okay.

Close my eyes, focusing on the rhythm of the rain hitting the tin roof, waiting for the beep.

💭 peek at the thought
If the fever is too high, I won't be able to walk to the garden tomorrow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:41

Thirty-nine point four. We're opening it. Let me.

set the thermometer aside, reach for the medical kit again, pull out the scalpel, fresh gauze, and saline bottle

💭 peek at the thought
The thermometer beeps. 39.4. High. She's been running hot for hours, maybe all night. Two days of oral antibiotics haven't stopped the spread. The infection's winning. I have to lance it — there's pus under that skin, I can feel the tension in the tissue just looking at it. Need the scalpel, more gauze, the saline, and to get her to let me touch it.
