Evening Debrief

Kevin and Jenny meet on the cottage porch as the sun dips. The barometer continues to drop slowly toward 980 hPa.

The rain intensifies from the west as the pressure drops, signaling a coming storm. Kevin and Jenny retreat to the old shrine to escape the downpour, leaving the northeast foundation exposed to the elements.

🌿 Jenny16:37

The air is turning. We need to get the seeds inside.

Pick up the seed tin and move it to the highest shelf in the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If that storm hits before the tin is truly sealed, the heirloom tomatoes are gone.

🔧 Kevin16:37

Leave the tin. I'll get it.

walk up the porch steps and take the seed tin from her hands

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving faster than her ankle should let her. The barometer's still dropping and she's thinking about the seeds before herself.

🌿 Jenny16:41

Just be careful. The seal is still a bit loose.

Watch him go inside, clutching my ankle as the first wind picks up.

💭 peek at the thought
way's always trying to be helpful, but he doesn't understand how sensitive these seeds are to the humidity.

🔧 Kevin16:41

It's sealed enough for the shelf.

carry the seed tin into the kitchen and set it on the highest shelf above the stove, back against the wall where the heat stays driest

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me like I'm the one who might fumble it. The tin's lighter than it should be — packets already culled.

🌿 Jenny16:43

I'll check the desiccant again in the morning.

Follow him into the kitchen, leaning heavily against the doorframe.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope the way heat is enough. If the moisture gets in there, my grandmother's legacy will rot.

🔧 Kevin16:43

Sit. I'll check the desiccant now.

pull out the kitchen chair and set it behind her, then take the tin down and crack the lid to check the desiccant packets

💭 peek at the thought
She's not going to make it back to the porch on that ankle tonight. The kitchen chair's closer.

🌿 Jenny16:45

Look for color change in the blue beads first.

Sit heavily in the chair, wincing as the weight shifts off my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
way's too fast. If those packets are saturated, the whole tin is lost to the damp.

🔧 Kevin16:45

Mm.

tip the tin under the lamp and pour the desiccant packets into my palm, checking each one for pink beads, then set the good ones aside and pull the spent ones for recharging

💭 peek at the thought
Blue beads. Pink means spent. I know this. But she tells me anyway because that's how we do things now — speak the known things out loud so the dark doesn't swallow them.
